KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Representing the University of Michigan women's tennis team, senior Kim Plaushines (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) and sophomore Debra Streifler (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park HS) competed against some of the region's top tennis players at the ITA Midwest Championships singles qualifying on Thursday and Friday (Oct. 23-24). However, after each suffering a loss during the qualifying round, neither Wolverine was able to advance into the main draw.
Streifler, seeded third in the qualifying draw, won her first match in impressive fashion, defeating Cincinnati's Christina Reyes in three sets. After losing the competitive first set by just two games (4-6), Streifler bounced back in the second, winning 6-3 to even the score. Reyes jumped to a commanding lead in the final frame, at one time holding a 5-1, 40-15 advantage, but again Streifler rallied and came back to pull out a 7-6 (2) victory to advance.
In the next round, Streifler again took her match against Toledo's Myriam Cueva to three sets and, after losing the first set 4-6, came back with a pair of 6-3 victories in the second and third sets to seal the win. In her third match, in which the winner would advance into the main draw, Iowa's Hilary Mintz proved to be too tough an opponent and swept Streifler in straight sets 6-2, 6-0.
Plaushines, seeded fourth, had a similar start to the qualifying round, battling through a marathon-like match against Ohio State's Lindsey Adams. After narrowly losing the first set 10-4 in the tiebreaker, Plaushines rebounded with 6-4 and 7-5 victories in the final two frames to advance. In her second match, Plaushines again played to three sets but was eliminated from the draw after suffering a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 loss to Notre Dame's Kelly Nelson.
The singles main draw of the ITA Midwest Championships begins Saturday (Oct. 25) at 9 a.m. and will feature Michigan tennis players Michelle DaCosta (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne HS), Kara Delicata (LaSalle, Ontario/Sanwich Secondary), Elizabeth Exon (Irvine, Calif./Woodridge HS), Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS), Leanne Rutherford (Calgary, Alberta/National Sports School) and Kavitha Tipirneni (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS). The Wolverines also have four duos competing in the doubles main draw.
The singles and doubles champions will advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships, which Michigan will host Nov. 6-9 at the Varsity Tennis Center.
