Walter Paces Michigan to Fourth Place at Pre-Nationals

WATERLOO, Iowa -- The No. 22-ranked University of Michigan women's cross country team turned in a fourth-place showing in the Purple race at the NCAA Pre-Nationals Saturday afternoon (Oct. 18) with 135 points on the 6,000-meter Irv Warren Golf Course. Defending NCAA champion Brigham Young took home the team title with 86 points, while North Carolina's Shalane Flanagan won the indidiual title with a time of 19:29.5.
Sophomore Rebecca Walter (Beverly Hills, Mich./Groves HS) set the pace for the Wolverine pack, as the regining Big Ten Conference co-Athlete of the Week clocked in with a collegiate-best time of 20:42.4 for 13th place in the field of 210. Walter's time bettered her previous college best of 20:49.3 set at the 2002 NCAA Championships (11/25/02) in Terre Haute, Ind.
Crossing just 7.5 seconds on her heels was graduate/senior Jessie Allen-Young (Loveland, Colo./Thompson Valley HS), who finished 18th with a time of 20:49.9. The time also set a personal best for Allen-Young, who came to Michigan with a previous best of 21:20.5.
Third across the line for the Maize and Blue was senior Lindsey Gallo (Freehold, N.J./Howell HS), finishing 25th with a time of 20:58.5. It marked the first time she had ever finished a 6,000-meter race under the 21-minute mark, as her previous best was 21:22.4 set at the 2002 NCAA Championships.
Three other Wolverines set personal-best times on the path, as Sarah Pizzo (Golden, Colo./Mullen HS), team captain Andrea Parker (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) and Chelsea Loomis (Traverse City, Mich./West HS) all crossed the finish line with lifetime-best marks. Pizzo placed 37th when she stopped the clock at 21:15.5, while Parker rounded out the Wolverines' team scoring with a 42nd-place finish in 21:19.9. Loomis used a time of 21:41.1 to finish 62nd.
Theresa Feldkamp (Lorain, Ohio/Amherest Steele HS) rounded out the Wolverine harriers, finishing 152nd with a time of 22:50.0.
The Wolverines return to the path next weekend when they travel to Ypsilanti, Mich., for the Eastern Michigan Classic. The meet is scheduled for Friday (Oct. 24) at 4:30 p.m. at Rolling Hills Park.
