Michigan Takes Third at Windy City Invite to Open Season

CHICAGO -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team repeated its performance of a year ago by placing third at the season-opening Windy City Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 11). The Wolverines scored 207.150 and finished behind No. 2 Ohio State (213.000) and No. 7 Iowa (208.750). Rounding out the rest of the field were third-ranked Illinois in fourth (207.050), No. 8 Minnesota in fifth (202.900) and host school Illinois-Chicago, ranked No. 13, in sixth (199.450).

Parzuchowski's 9.400 helped U-M post the second best team score on rings.

The best individual performance turned in by a Wolverine at the Windy City was by two-time NCAA still rings All-American Conan Parzuchowski (Northville, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit HS), who won the rings with a score of 9.400.

Jamie Hertza (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield HS) turned in a solid performance, finishing second overall on the pommel horse with a score of 9.350 and placing ninth on the floor exercise with a score of 8.900, one spot behind teammate Geoff Corrigan (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer HS), who finished eighth (8.950).

Corrigan also had a very impressive performance on the parallel bars as his 8.750 earned him a tie for fourth place. Other noteworthy performances came from Justin Laury (Marietta, Ga./McEachern HS), who finished sixth on still rings (8.750), and Derek Croad (Jackson, Mich./Western HS), who earned a top-10 finish by taking ninth on the vault (9.050).

The Wolverines return to action next weekend in their home opener when they host preseason No. 1 Oklahoma, the defending NCAA champion, on Saturday (Jan. 18) at 7:30 p.m. in Cliff Keen Arena.
