Dayton -- The University of Dayton enters the weekend with a 3-3-1 record following a pair of victories last weekend at the Dayton Marriott Flyer Classic. The Flyers downed Vermont 2-0 on Friday (Sept. 20) and defeated Denver 2-1 in double overtime on Sunday (Sept. 22). Sophomore Chris Rolfe, Dayton's leading point scorer, contributed to all four goals, scoring three and assisting on the other. Rolfe was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week and was selected as the Atlantic Ten Conference Player of the week for his seven-point weekend. Rolfe's 13 points on the season (six goals and one assists) are nine points more than any other Flyer in 2002. Second-year head coach Dave Schureck has used a pair of keepers in the early portion of the season. Junior Jason Kurdziel received the last two starts between the pipes and has led the Flyers to back-to-back victories allowing only one goal on ten shots. Michigan vs. Dayton ...
Michigan and Dayton each have one win in the series' first two years, with each team holding ground with a victory on home turf. The Wolverines evened the series last year with a 2-1 defeat of the Flyers on Ann Arbor Pioneer High School's Hollway Field. Sophomore forward Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) tallied his first career goal on an assist from brother Robert Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit), marking the only time in school history a pair of brothers combined to score a goal. In 2000 the Flyers posted a 3-1 victory on Baujan Field in Dayton, Ohio.
Last Week: Two Down to One ...
Michigan was scheduled to host a pair of matches last weekend, but due to heavy rain, lighting and unplayable field conditions, the Wolverines' Friday night (Sept. 20) match against Oakland was cancelled, resulting in U-M playing only once, a 1-0 loss to Penn State on Sunday (Sept. 22). The weather-cancelled game against Oakland was rescheduled for Sunday, Nov. 10 in Rochester, Mich., the home of the Golden Grizzlies. Sunday's match was the Wolverines' Big Ten Conference opener against Penn State. The two teams played a tough defensive match with the Nittany Lions scoring the game's lone goal at 72:09 off a well-played corner kick. Junior/sophomore Joe Zawacki (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) registered four saves in his return to the starting lineup.
Rain, Rain Go Away, You'll Make Us Play Another Day ...
Mother Nature decided the outcome of the Michigan vs. Oakland match Friday night (Sept. 20) when she sent heavy rains and lighting in the Ann Arbor area, forcing the postponement of the match. After a 30-minute delay, the officials took the field to survey its conditions. It only took them five minutes to rule the field unplayable and the head coaches to reschedule the match for Sunday, Nov. 10 (time TBA). The venue will change as the match will be played at the OU Soccer Field in Rochester, Mich. The two teams met there last year and played to a 2-2 tie.
Turpin Tops List ...
Sophomore forward Mychal Turpin tallied a pair of goals at the Brown Invitational to increase his season total to six tallies in 2002. With the six goals, Turpin now stands atop the program's single-season goal-scoring list. His six scores are one more than the previous record held by three players. Fellow classmate Knox Cameron (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman HS) is the only two-time five-goal scorer as he has tallied five goals in 2002 to match his total of five scored last year as a freshman.
Dynamic Duo ...
Sophomore forwards Knox Cameron and Mychal Turpin have developed into a deadly front line as the two have combined to for 11 goals and three assists in 2002. Cameron leads the team in total points with 13 (five goals and three assists), while Turpin is second on the team with 12 points (six goals). Turpin's six goals set a program record for single-season goals scored. Cameron's 13 points tie his own record for single-season points scored set last year.
Cameron Leads Big Ten ...
With 13 points in the first six games of the season, Knox Cameron leads the Big Ten Conference in points per game with 2.17. Cameron, the Big Ten's Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 8, has totaled five goals and three assists this season. His 13 points rank him tied for fourth in the conference for points scored.
Turpin Averages One a Game ...
Sophomore Mychal Turpin has scored six goals in six games for the Wolverines this year for an average of one goal per match. The one-goal average is tied for the conference lead with teammate Jurgen Schmieder (Regensburg, Bavaria/Stifland Gymnasium), who has three tallies in as many games in 2002. Turpin netted the program's first hat trick with three consecutive goals in the first 45 minutes of action against IUPUI (Sept. 6). Schmieder posted the second three-goal game later in the match when he sent three straight goals past the Jaguar keeper in the game's second frame.
Adam Bruh, Go Stand in the Corner ...
Michigan freshman midfielder Adam Bruh (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Wheatley HS)was sent to the corner nine times last Sunday (Sept. 22) on the U-M Soccer Field against Penn State. The Wolverines were awarded nine corner kicks against the Nittany Lions, three of which came in a two-minute span. The nine-corner kick game was the second consecutive such contest the Maize and Blue has played in. Michigan took nine corners against Yale (Sept. 15).
Outscoring the Conference ...
Despite being held scoreless last weekend, Michigan is tied for the conference lead in total points, matching Michigan State with 52 points. The Spartans have played one more game than the Wolverines, thus the Maize and Blue leads the conference in points per game. Averaging 8.67 points to MSU's 7.43, Michigan leads the conference in points per game. Michigan also leads the conference in goals per game with 3.0 (18 goals in six games) and assists per game at 2.67 (16 assists in six games).
