The University of Michigan women's golf team will stay in Big Ten country for the third straight tournament as the Wolverines head to Iowa City, Iowa, Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 28-29) to defend their title at the Lady Northern Invitational at Finkbine Golf Course. The 12-team field features teams eight Big Ten teams. Finkbine, which will also host the 2003 Big Ten Championships, will be set up for a par of 73 and 6,000 yards.
The Lady Northern Invitational Field
The Lady Northern Invitational features 12 teams and will include: Illinois, Illinois State, Indiana, Iowa, Kent State, Michigan, Minnesota, Northern Illinois, Northwestern, Penn State, Southern Illinois and Wisconsin.
The Lady Northern Invitational Schedule
The Lady Northern Invitational will consist of 54 holes, 36 of which will be played on Saturday (Sept. 28) followed by 18 on Sunday (Sept. 29).

The Lady Northern Invitational Scoring Format
Scoring for the Lady Northern Invitational will be six players, count the low four scores each round.
The Michigan Lineup at the Lady Northern Invitational
The Wolverines will carry six players for the Michigan squad at the Lady Northern Invitational. Sophomore Laura Olin (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) and fifth-year senior Stephanie Stasik (Lubbock, Texas/Coronado HS) will head up the Michigan team going to Finkbine. The rest of the team positions will be determined in the week's two-day qualifiers.
Last Year at the Lady Northern Invitational: Career Performances Pace U-M to Title
The Wolverines shot a final-round 292 team total to secure the Lady Northern team title at Stone Creek Golf Club (Sept. 22-23) in Urbana, Ill. Leading from start to finish, the Wolverines carded team totals of 290 and 291 in the first two rounds to help give them a school-record total of 873. The Wolverines' 873 total at the Lady Northern shattered the U-M record for best three-round tournament total by 16 strokes, bettering the 889 total at the Women's Collegiate Shootout (Oct. 9-10, 2000). Kim Benedict led the charge for the Maize and Blue as she finished just a shot behind medalist Martina Gillen of Kent State (74-73-69/216). Benedict tallied a 217 total after firing rounds of 74-73-70. Misia Lemanski tied for fourth (71-74-74/219), Cortney Reno tied for sixth (72-73-75/220) and LeAnna Wicks tied for eighth (73-71-78/222). Laura Olin made her collegiate debut and tied for 11th as she tallied rounds of 77-74-73 for a 224 total. Bess Bowers tied for 57th (73-76-81/240).
Last Time on the Links: Wolverines Drop a Spot at Fossum Invitational
The Wolverines tallied a 317 final-round total and dropped one spot to finish sixth at the Mary Fossum Invitational (Sept. 21-22) at Forest Akers West Course in East Lansing, Mich. The Wolverines had team rounds of 312 and 305 during the first two rounds Saturday to give them a 934 total. Laura Olin led the Wolverines with a 229 total (77-73-77), which was good for a tie for 11th. Stephanie Stasik played consistent golf and tied for 18th with a career-best 233 total after surrounding rounds of 78 around a career-low 77. Other Wolverine finishes included: Kim Benedict (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS), tied for 21st (81-75-79/235); Amy Schmucker (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori HS), tied for 34th (75-81-83/239); and Courtney Goebel (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina HS), tied for 46th (81-80-82/243). Competing as an individual, Sarah Kruer (La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla Country Day) tied for 36th (78-81-81/240).
Making Copies
For the second tournament in a row, sophomore Laura Olin not only finished as the top Wolverine but also tallied her second 229 54-hole tournament total. Olin sandwiched rounds of 78 around a season-best 73 for her 229 Fossum total, which tied her for 11th. The previous week, Olin had back-to-back rounds of 77 then a 75 for a 229 total at the Wolverine Invitational and a tie-for-fourth individual finish. She leads the team with a 76.33 scoring average through the first two tournaments and has now shot 11 straight rounds of 78 or better.
Making the Best of Opportunities
Fifth-year senior Stephanie Stasik improved her season-best 54-hole tournament total by 14 strokes with her 233 total at the Fossum Invitational. She shot 247 twice before, including the previous week at the Wolverine Invitational. Stasik's three rounds at the Fossum Invitational (78-77-78) either tied or bettered her career low coming into the event. Her previous best round occurred during her freshman season (1998-99) when she shot 78 in the final round of the Bonita Bay Invitational (Oct. 24, 1998).
Lowering the Season Bests
Junior Sarah Kruer recorded a season-best 54-hole tournament total of 240 at the Mary Fossum Invitational, shaving 13 strokes off the 253 she tallied in the season's only other event, the Wolverine Invitational (Sept. 14-15). Kruer recorded a season-best 78 in the first round of the Fossum and is averaging 82.16 strokes per round.
Inside the Numbers
Senior Kim Benedict has played 39 consecutive tournaments for the Wolverines.
Sophomore Laura Olin has played 15 consecutive tournaments for the Wolverines.
Michigan's second-round team total of 305 at the Fossum Invitational is the Wolverines' lowest team total of the year.
