Scouting the Opponents ...
Oakland -- With back-to-back MCC conference titles in 2000 and 2001, the Golden Grizzlies are looking to make it three in a row despite the lack of senior leadership on this year's squad. Like the Wolverines, Oakland owns a 2-2-1 record this season, but after two early losses in the Diadora Challenge, the Golden Grizzlies are undefeated in their last three outings. Returning nearly all of last season's defenders who gave up only 18 goals on the season, defense will again be Oakland's biggest strength this season. Led by team captain Ryan Rzepka, the Golden Grizzly defenders have helped rookie goaltender Jeff Wiese post back-to-back shutouts over Marquette (1-0) and Bowling Green (3-0). Other key players returning to the Oakland starting lineup are sophomore forward Philip Braathen, who leads the team with two goals and two assists, and junior midfielder Anders Vollen. Both earned All- MCC second team honors in 2001. In the only regular-season meeting between the Golden Grizzlies and Michigan, the two teams battled to a 2-2 tie in 2001. Penn State C Penn State enters this weekend playing .500 soccer under 15th-year head coach Barry Gorman, with a record of 3-3-0. Last weekend, the Nittany Lions went 1-1 in two home matches with a 2-1 victory over Nova Friday (Sept. 13) and a 1-2 loss to American on Sunday (Sept. 15). Sophomore forward Chad Severs is the Big Ten Conference co-leader in total points and goals in 2002. Severs is tied with Michigan sophomore forward Knox Cameron (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman HS) for the conference lead in total points as each forward has 13. Another Wolverine sophomore forward is tied atop the conference lead with Severs as Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) and the Penn State player each have six tallies. Severs is second in the conference in shots attempted with 28 in six games. Other key returnees for the Nittany Lions are captains, Ben Dawson , Brent Jacquette and Jorma Makippa. In two regular-season matches between Penn State and Michigan, the Nittany Lions hold a 2-0 edge, including a 2-1-overtime victory at Elbel Field in 2000. Overall PSU holds a 3-0 series lead with a double-overtime victory at the Big Ten Championships in 2000. Penn State on the Internet: www.gopsusports.com.

In Michigan's Sunday matchup with Yale, Turpin tallied his sixth goal of the year and Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS) started his first career match between the pipes and made three saves, but the Wolverines lost 2-1.
