Wolverines Outpace the Field at Mel Brodt Invitational

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's cross country team earned its second consecutive victory to open the season, narrowly edging Western Michigan by two points to win the Mel Brodt Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 14). Leading the pack for the Wolverines was junior Lindsey Gallo (Freehold, N.J./Howell HS), who finished second overall and first among all college competitors at 18:29.
Also placing in the top 10 for Michigan was redshirt freshman Stephanie Hirtle (Salmon Arm, B.C./Salmon Arm SS), who placed 10th in 19:01, one tick quicker than junior teammate Rachel Sturtz (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS), who finished 11th in 19:02. Also contributing to the Wolverines' victory were junior Lauren Weddell (Carmel, Ind/Carmel HS), who crossed at 19:18 in 17th place, and redshirt freshman Theresa Feldkamp (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst Steele HS), who finished 26th in 19:37.
The Wolverines will head west to Seattle, Wash., for the Sundodger Invitational next Saturday (Sept. 21). The women's race is scheduled to begin at 10:15 a.m. PDT.
