Burns served as vice president of the USECAFMG for the last four years, and prior to that served as the organization's secretary/treasurer from 1988-91. A three-time winner of the National Assistant Coach of the Year award, Burns is also a member of both the USA Gymnastics Men's Finance Committee and Board of Directors.
Burns was a four-time letterwinner for Penn State University (1977-80), where he received his undergraduate degree in geological science. After graduation, he moved on to the University of Iowa, where he served as an assistant coach until 1991. He then coached at several successful gyms across the country, including Gymnastrum in Allentown, Pa., the YMCA in Tacoma, Wash., and the Albuquerque Gymnastics School in New Mexico. Burns joined the University of Michigan staff as assistant coach in August 1997 and helped coach the men's team to the NCAA championship in 1999.
