ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Two All-Americans who earned top conference honors in their respective sports have been selected as the University of Michigan's Male and Female Athletes of the Year, the U-M Athletic Department announced Wednesday (June 19). Senior Katie Jazwinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS), a distance runner on the women's track and field team, and sophomore Dan Ketchum (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS), a freestyle standout on the men's swimming and diving squad, are the 2001-02 honorees.

Jazwinski
Jazwinski earned her second track and field All-America honor with a seventh-place finish in the 5,000-meter run at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Baton Rouge, La. She ran to a 13th-place finish in the mile, clocking in with a personal-best time of 4:44.40 at the NCAA Indoor Championships. In addition to her accomplishments in the spring track and field seasons, Jazwinski completed her cross country career in 2000 as a two-time All-American (1999-2000).
Jazwinski became just the third Wolverine to receive Big Ten Conference Female Athlete of the Meet honors when she won the mile run and had runner-up showings in the 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs at the indoor championships. At the conference outdoor meet the tri-captain crossed the finish line in first place in the 5,000 meters and had a runner-up showing in the 1,500-meter run. In the two Big Ten championship meets this year Jazwinski earned 34 points for the Wolverines, leading the Maize and Blue to both the indoor and outdoor team championships.
Off the track, Jazwinski was named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District IV second team and was selected as Michigan's Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient. She is a four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and earned the U-M Athletic Academic Achievement honor five times.
