Hopwood, Thompson Compete at World Championships

Hopwood, a three-time All-American, competed in the 100- and 200-meter breaststrokes and the 4x100-meter medley relay. The relay was where Hopwood had the biggest impact as he swam the breaststroke in the morning session and helped the United States qualify with a time of 3:34.92. Once in the finals, the relay team of Aaron Peirsol, David Denniston, Peter Marshall and Jason Lezak posted a new world record with a time of 3.29.00.
Individually Hopwood finished in the top 17 of both breaststroke events. After posting a career-best time in the 200-yard breaststroke at the NCAA Championships (March 28-30) at 1:56.59, Hopwood carried over the momentum into the FINA World Swimming Championships. With a mark of 2:11.26 in the 200-meter breaststroke, Hopwood placed 12th, while his time of 1:00.83 earned a 17th-place finish in the 100-meter breaststroke.
Thompson, a 2000 Olympic bronze medalist, also concluded a successful weekend in Russia. In the 1,500-meter freestyle, Thompson was runner-up to Grant Hackett of Australia after posting a time of 14:39.43. Thompson also swam in the morning session of the 800-meter freestyle relay that qualified in the fifth spot with a time of 7:16.77. In the finals, the team made of Chad Carvin, Scott Tueker and Southern Cal's Erik Vendt and Klete Keller moved up to third with a mark of 7:08.73.
