Simmons, Wilkey Lead Wolverines at Hillsdale Relays

HILLSDALE, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team took five top-five finishes Thursday through Saturday (April 25-27) in the non-scoring Hillsdale College "Gina" Relays. Doris Simmons (Cassopolis, Mich./Ross Beatty HS) led Michigan with two top-five results and Candace Wilkey (Elmvale, Ontario/Elmvale District HS) took first in the triple jump for the Maize and Blue's only event title.
In addition to placing fourth in the heptathlon on Thursday and Friday, Simmons finished second in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 14.77 on Saturday. She was one of four Wolverines to set personal marks in the meet as Rachel Igbawua (Van Buren Township, Mich./Van Buren HS) out-jumped her previous personal best in the high jump (1.63m), Christy Tzilos (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) set her mark in the 400-meter hurdles and Wilkey broke her personal record in the triple jump.
Wilkey's jump of 38C6 3/4 feet (11.73m) was Michigan's second longest jump of the season, short of Teyonna Simpson's (Fremont, Calif./Mission San Jose HS) mark of 40C2 3/4 (12.26m), and outdistanced the field by one-third of a foot.
Jane Martineau (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant HS) set a team season best in the 3,000-meter run with a finishing mark of 10:18.30. Martineau surpassed the previous best by over 10 seconds. Martineau finished third in the race, one spot ahead of teammate Jeanne Spink (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea HS), who crossed the finish line in 10:33.10.
Michigan will head to California next Friday (May 3) to participate in the Cardinal Twilight at Cobb Track and Angell Field on the campus of Stanford University.
