ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Three goals by junior forward Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario) vaulted the sixth-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Lake Superior State on Saturday night (March 9), evening the best-of-three first-round series in the CCHA Tournament at one game apiece. Cammalleri netted one in the first and two in the final stanza as the Wolverines staved off elimination and forced a third and deciding game on Sunday (March 10, 7:35 p.m.).

After spotting Lake Superior a four-goal lead in the series opener, the Wolverines opened the contest with a 2-0 lead just 10:32 into the game on markers by freshman forward Michael Woodford (Westford, Mass.) and Cammalleri.
Woodford gave U-M a 1-0 advantage just 5:03 into the contest, scoring his second goal in as many nights, and extended his point streak to a season-high four games in the process. Freshman forwards Milan Gajic (Burnaby, B.C.) and Charlie Henderson (East Lansing, Mich.) assisted on the effort, with Gajic creating a turnover in the LSSU zone, receiving a pass from Henderson, and finding Woodford at the side of the net for an easy goal, as Lake State netminder Matt Violin was covering Gajic.
Cammalleri made it 2-0 at 10:32 on his first of three goals, scoring as senior goaltender Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) was just about to exit the ice for a delayed penalty call. Cammalleri collected the puck in the Lake Superior zone after a failed clearing attempt, deked a defender and backhanded a shot from the slot that beat Violin on his glove side.
The Lakers closed the gap in the second period when Bo Cheesman shoveled the puck into an empty net, scoring on a rebound from Will Magnuson's shot from the right point. Michigan responded, however, with Cammalleri netting the game's final two markers in the final five minutes of the game to force a series-deciding contest.
Cammalleri's second goal came on the power play as LSSU's Chris McNamara was in the penalty box for holding. Junior forward John Shouneyia (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and sophomore defenseman Mike Komisarek (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) set the play up, with Komisarek finding Cammalleri for a one-time shot from the right faceoff circle to beat Violin through his five-hole.
Violin was replaced by Terry Denike after a Lake Superior timeout following Cammalleri's goal at 15:16, but when LSSU brought Denike to the bench in favor of an extra attacker, Cammalleri completed the hat trick at 17:50, scoring from just outside the Laker blueline.
Violin stopped 31 shots and allowed three goals while Denike stopped one shot as Michigan outshot the Lakers by a 36-16 margin. Blackburn halted 15 of Lake State's 16 shots to get the win. Each team had four power-play opportunties, with only Michigan converting on one of its chances.
Michigan and Lake Superior State will conclude the series on Sunday (March 10), with the winner advancing to the CCHA Super Six at Joe Louis Arena in downtown Detroit. Opening faceoff for the elimination game is slated for 7:35 p.m. at Yost Ice Arena.

Michigan will play in a deciding third game in the first round of the CCHA Tournament for fourth time in school history and for the first time since the 1998 campaign. Overall, the Wolverines are 1-2 in the rubber match, with their only victory coming in 1998.
U-M has scored a power-play goal in each of the last five games, a season high for consecutive games with a power-play marker.
Michigan is 11-0-1 when scoring the game's first two goals and 17-0-1 when carrying a lead of two goals in the game.
The Wolverine have held the Lakers to 16 shots in each of the first two games of the series and have not allowed LSSU to post more than 16 shots in each of the four meetings this season.
A No. 1 seed has never lost a first-round series in the CCHA Tournament.
Michigan will be playing on Sunday for the first time this season. Michigan's win was its first ever against Lake Superior State in the first round of the CCHA Tournament. Entering tonight's contest, the Wolverines were 0-3 against the Lakers.
Q U O T E S
Head Coach Red Berenson
On tonight's game ... "The team that scores the first goal is going to have an edge, especially is it was us. We needed to get the first goal, and it was important. I thought we played better in the first period and didn't give up as much. But there were times in the game where we were on our heels and they (LSSU) got their chances and capitalized on one. It was a close game going into the third period. We expected it would be a close game."
On the teams' matching up ... "I think you can expect more of the same tomorrow (Sunday). The teams match up well. They're doing what they have to do to stay in the game and we're doing what we have to do. We're trying to win and obviously they're trying to keep us from winning."
On Mike Cammalleri's leadership ... "These are the games when your best players have to be your best players. I thought he was one of those players tonight. I though (Jed) Ortmeyer had a better game, as well as (John) Shouneyia and (Mark) Mink. The upperclassmen are showing the way."
On Lake Superior State's defense ... "I think it's good defense. They got us a little rattled and off balance. The way this series has gone, you're either playing in their end or our end. It's one end or the other. In your own end, when they start to forecheck and put some pressure on us, they got some chances and had us on our heels. When we get the puck in their end, we have them on their heels. That's the way the game is played."
Freshman Forward Milan Gajic
On the team's play ... "At the end of [last night's] game we crashed the net pretty hard, and a lot of guys stepped up tonight. We have to approach it like every other game. We can't come in thinking we're going to win or we're going to lose. We just have to play hard."
On being surprised by Lake Superior's play ... "Not really. It's playoff hockey, it's just even. Even tomorrow (Sunday) night, it's just even for both teams, so you have to come out and they're going to give it everything they've got. It could be their last game."
Junior Forward Mike Cammalleri
On playing with a two-goal lead ... "There comes a certain point where you know they're going to get some chances, but we just have to shut them down and give them as little good chances as possible."
