Wolverines Turn in Solid Performance at Stanford Invite

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team received first-place finishes from senior tri-captain Katie Jazwinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) and sophomore Vera Simms (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani HS) as the Wolverines continued their outdoor season at the Stanford Invitational on Friday and Saturday (March 29-30).
Jazwinski, the reigning 800 meters champion at the Stanford Invite, defended her title in the event Friday as she crossed the line with a first-place time of 2:09.53. She also took to the track Saturday to run in the 1,500 meters top section, finishing 23rd with a time of 4:36.37.
Simms, who had a pair of victories at last week's Florida State Relays, continued her strong 2002 campaign as she claimed the B Section of the long jump with a personal-best leap of 19-4 3/4. Simms' long jump beat her previous personal best by nearly five inches as her old mark stood at 19-0 set at the George Mason Patriot Games (Feb. 2).
Freshman Stephanie Hirtle (Salmon Arm, B.C./Salmon Arm) added to the Maize and Blue's strong showing Friday as she turned in a second-place performance in the B Section of the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:33.16. Rachel Sturtz (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City HS) placed fifth in the race as she clocked in with a personal-best 4:35.54. Sturtz's previous mark in the event was 4:39.69 at the 2001 Mt. SAC Relays.
In the field events, Melissa Bickett (Akron, Ohio/Revere HS) registered a pair of NCAA provisional marks with throws of 168-3 in the Elite Section of the discus (Saturday) and 49-0 1/4 in the shot put (Friday). April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) had a provisional throw of her own as she sent the shot put 51-3 1/2.
The Wolverines have a week off before they return to action April 13 for the Miami (Ohio) Invitational in Oxford, Ohio.
