MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Led by a first-place effort on the pommel horse by junior Jamie Hertza (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield HS), six members of the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team competed in the individual event finals at the Big Ten Conference Championships Saturday (March 23) at Minnesota's Sports Pavilion.
Hertza shared the pommel horse title with his beautiful 9.400 routine, matching all-around champion Raj Bhavsar of Ohio State for top honors. It is the second time a Wolverine has captured the Big Ten pommel horse title in the last three years. Senior Scott Vetere (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown HS) captured the title in 2000.
Junior Conan Parzuchowski (Northville, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit HS) finished runner-up on the still rings with a score of 9.550. Senior Justin Toman (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall HS) finished fourth on the parallel bars with a 8.800.
Also finishing in the top five for the Wolverines were senior Brad Kenna (Barberton, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit HS) and freshman Edward Umphrey (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva HS) on the vault (9.2375) and floor exercise (8.8000), respectively.
The Wolverine return to action in two weeks when they travel to Norman, Okla., to compete in the 2002 NCAA Championships (April 4-6).
