Wolverines Fall to Badgers in Big Ten Home Opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis squad remained winless in Big Ten Conference action, falling 6-1 to Wisconsin Saturday afternoon (March 16) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (4-6, 0-3 Big Ten) lost a close doubles point to the Badgers (9-3, 4-0 Big Ten) and could only manage one singles victory.
Michigan took the early advantage in doubles as junior Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach HS) and sophomore Kim Plaushines (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) won an 8-3 match over Katie Dougherty and Teresa Gonzaga at No. 2. Wisconsin evened things as Lindsay Martin and Katie McGaffigan posted an 8-5 victory against sophomores Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) and Kavitha Tipirneni (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS) at No. 3. With the team point resting on the outcome at No. 1, the Badgers' Linde Mues and Lara Vojnov rallied from a 6-3 deficit to beat freshman Michelle DaCosta (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne HS) and Leanne Rutherford (Calgary, Alberta/National Sports School) by an 8-6 score and secure the doubles point.
With a 1-0 advantage obtained in doubles, the Badgers won five of the six singles matches to claim the victory. McGaffigan started things for Wisconsin with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Rutherford at No. 4. The Wolverines got on the board as Duprez claimed a dominating 6-2, 6-1 victory over Dougherty at No. 5. Wisconsin put the match away by winning the next three matches on the court, with Vanessa Rauh (No. 1) and Shana McElroy (No. 3) winning in straight sets and Mues posting a 6-0, 1-6, 6-0 victory over DaCosta at No. 2. The Badgers' Martin outlasted junior Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS) for the final point of the match, winning a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(3) decision at No. 6.
The Wolverines look to capture their first conference win of the season tomorrow (Sunday, March 17), hosting Minnesota at the Varsity Tennis Center. The match will begin at 11 a.m.
