Michigan Rebounds to Pound Illinois-Chicago at Home

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team overpowered Illinois-Chicago Saturday (Feb. 9) at the Varsity Tennis Center, claiming a 7-0 shutout to rebound from last week's 5-2 setback against No. 13-ranked Notre Dame. The Wolverines (3-1) swept the doubles to earn the team point and dominated the singles action with straight-set wins.
U-M took command from the outset by winning all three doubles matches. Junior Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach HS) and sophomore Kim Plaushines (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) yielded only one game by winning 8-1 over Britta Dohmann and Zvjezdana Malesevic at No. 2. Sophomores Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) and Kavitha Tipirneni (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS) secured the team point with a dominating 8-2 victory at No. 3 over Alyson Stalzer and Karen Liwanpo. Freshmen Michelle DaCosta (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne HS) and Leanne Rutherford (Calgary, Alberta/National Sports School), the Wolverines' top doubles tandem, rallied from a 4-1 deficit to claim their 10th victory of the season (10-4), winning 8-6 against Nicole Derouin and Ayca Gumuscu at No. 1.
Michigan continued the dominating performance in singles, sweeping all six matches in straight sets. The Wolverines yielded only 21 games in the six matches, and they won four of the first six sets by a 6-0 score.
The Wolverines continue their homestand against Tennessee on Valentine's Day (Thursday, Feb. 14). The match with the Lady Volunteers begins at 6 p.m. at the Varsity Tennis Center.
