Jazwinski, Phillips Lead U-M to Second-Place Finish
2/9/2002 12:00:00 AM | Women's Track & Field
Senior tri-captain Katie Jazwinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) won the 3,000 meters for the second consecutive week and fellow tri-captain April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS), earned her second win in as many days at the Collegiate Challenge as she won the shot put.
Jazwinski lowered her season-best time in the 3,000 meters by more than three seconds, as she crossed the line in first place with a time of 9:44.12. Jazwinski finished nine seconds ahead of second-place Liz Ben-Ishai of Toronto (9:53.30) to score her second straight win in the event. Last week at the George Mason Patriot Games (Feb. 2), the reigning Big Ten outdoor champion finished nearly 20 seconds ahead of the pack and won with a time of 9:47.49.
Also earning points for the Wolverines in the 3,000 meters was Andrea Parker (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS). Parker finished with a fifth-place time of 10:04.74, her personal best.
Phillips used an NCAA provisional throw of 51-5 to claim her second victory at the two-day event. It was Phillips' fifth NCAA provisional toss in the shot put and sixth overall provisional throw of the season. Friday (Feb. 8), Phillips earned her first provisional throw in the weight throw with a fourth-place throw of 58-6 3/4, shattering her week-old record in the event. Melissa Bickett (Akron, Ohio/Revere HS) finished second behind Phillips in the shot put as she too earned NCAA provisional status with her throw of 49-1 1/2. It was Bickett's fourth provisional toss of the season.
The Wolverines had three runners finish in the top seven spots in the 800 meters, as Theresa Feldkamp (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst Steele HS) used an NCAA provisional time of 2:08.34 to lead the Wolverines with a fourth-place finish. Feldkamp became the first Wolverine to earn provisional status on the track. Both Phillips and Bickett have done so in field events.
Ursula Taylor (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg HS) followed Feldkamp across the finish line in fifth place with a time of 2:10.15, and Rachel Sturtz (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City HS) finished in 2:10.95, good for seventh place in the event.
The Wolverines return home next Saturday (Feb. 16) for their final indoor home meet of the season, the Harold Silverston Invitational. Field events will start at 9:30 a.m. and running events will begin at noon.
