Michigan Individuals Compete at Winter Cup Challenge

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Nine members of the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team traveled to Las Vegas to compete in the two-day Winter Cup Challenge. All nine Wolverines were in action Friday (Feb. 8) during the all-around finals and individual event qualification, but none finished in the top six to qualify for Saturday's event finals.
Senior Justin Toman (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall HS) led the way for the Wolverines with an 18th-place finish in the all-around (49.950). Contributing to his all-around score was an eighth-place tie on the still rings (8.800).
Sophomore Chris Gatti (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford HS) posted U-M's other top-10 finish, tying for 10th on the still rings (8.700).
Also representing U-M were seniors Daniel Diaz-Luong (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt HS) and Brad Kenna (Barberton, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit HS); juniors Jamie Hertza (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield HS), Conan Parzuchowski (Northville, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit HS) and Kris Zimmerman (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier HS); and freshmen Geoff Corrigan (Colorado Springs, Colo./William J. Palmer HS) and Edward Umphrey (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva HS).
With their nine-member team, the Wolverines had the most participants in the USA Gymnastics-sponsored meet, which is used to fill two open positions on the U.S. National Team. Though no Wolverine was able to capture one of the two remaining spots on the National Team, Diaz-Luong and Zimmerman retain their position on the team for the remainder of the season.
The Wolverines return to action on Saturday (Feb. 16) when they host Illinois-Chicago at 7 p.m. in Cliff Keen Arena.
