For the fourth consecutive year, members of the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team will be competing at the USA Gymnastics-sponsored Winter Cup Challenge on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 8-9) at the Pepsi All Sport Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. Competing against almost 100 of the nation's top male gymnasts, the Wolverine representatives will vie for the three remaining spots on the U.S. National Team.
Representing U-M will be seniors Daniel Diaz-Luong (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt HS), Brad Kenna (Barberton, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit HS) and Justin Toman (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall); juniors Jamie Hertza (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield HS), Conan Parzuchowski (Northville, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit HS) and Kris Zimmerman (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier HS); sophomore Chris Gatti (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford HS); and freshmen Geoff Corrigan (Colorado Springs, Colo./William J. Palmer HS) and Edward Umphrey (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva HS).
The competitions has been broke down into two days, with the first consisting of the all-around competition and the second the individual event finals with the top six individuals on each event qualifying from the first day's competition.

Last Year
Four Wolverines competed at the 2001 Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas, Nev. Seniors Daniel Diaz-Luong and Brad Kenna and sophomore Kris Zimmerman all qualified for the all-around finals. Zimmerman claimed the highest spot for the Wolverines in the two-day event, finishing sixth overall, with Diaz-Luong and Kenna placing 17th and 21st, respectively.
Michigan Falls to No. 1 Sooners, Defeats Huskers
The Wolverines fell to No. 1-ranked Oklahoma 218.125-208.450 but defeated No. 11 Nebraska 208.450-206.750 on Saturday (Feb. 2) at the McCasland Fieldhouse in Norman, Okla. The Wolverines were led by juniors Jamie Hertza and Conan Parzuchowski. Hertza tied for the pommel horse championship with a 9.350 and contributed on the floor exercise with a fifth-place finish (8.950). Parzuchowski finished second on the still rings with a score of 9.450. He also competed on the floor exercise, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar.
Leaders and Best
The Wolverines remained the No. 5-ranked team in the nation for the second straight week. Big Ten Conference members hold the No. 2 through 7 positions in the rankings, with No. 2 Illinois, No. 3 Penn State, No. 4 Iowa, No. 6 Minnesota and No. 7 Ohio State joining Michigan.
Individually, Michigan is ranked among the nation's best. Leading the way for the Wolverines is junior Conan Parzuchowski, who is ranked second on the still rings with a 9.575 average. Also ranked among the top 10 are Daniel Diaz-Luong (pommel horse, sixth), Edward Umphrey (floor exercise, seventh) and Chris Gatti (parallel bars, ninth).
