Wolverines Blanked by Wildcats in Big Ten Opener

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis was unable to upend No. 13-ranked Northwestern Saturday afternoon (Feb. 23) at the Combe Tennis Center, losing 7-0 for its third consecutive loss to a top-25 ranked team. The Wolverines (3-4) were unable to come away with a win in any of the nine matches.
Northwestern swept all three doubles contests to gain a 1-0 lead in the match. The Wildcats carried the momentum into singles, winning four of the six matches in straight sets and claiming a pair of matches into three sets. The Wolverines' best opportunity for a win came at No. 3, with freshman Michelle DaCosta (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne HS) losing the match in a third-set tie-breaker, 10-8, to No. 95-ranked Jessica Rush (2-6, 6-2, 7-6).
Michigan looks to end its three-match losing streak at No. 34-ranked Illinois tomorrow (Sunday, Feb. 24, 11 a.m. CST) at the Atkins Tennis Center in Champaign, Ill.
