The Wolverines came onto the ice and dominated the opening 15 minutes of the game, controlling the play in the BGSU zone while holding the Falcons to scoring chances in transition play. The period took a drastic turn, however, in the final five minutes of the stanza as the tide turned in favor of Bowling Green when Kevin Bieksa blasted a shot from the blue line that zipped through the five-hole of Montoya to give BGSU a 1-0 lead with 1:30 remaining. Penalties also began to pile on at that point as five minors were assessed in the final 1:30, including three to the Wolverines. Statistically, the first period was even as both teams registered 11 shots on goal and went 0-for-2 on the power play.
In the second period the Falcons continued their momentum, opening the stanza on the power play and receiving a 5-on-3 advantage just 41 seconds in as senior forward John Shouneyia (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and sophomore forward Michael Woodford (Westford, Mass.) were serving penalties from the last minute of the first period. Woodford's infraction, which was handed out at as the buzzer sounded to end the first, put the Wolverines down a man for the first two minutes of the second. Michigan survived the setbacks and responded with some offense of its own, peppering BGSU netmider Jordan Sigalet during a power play awarded immediately after returning to full strength.
Michigan finally solved Sigalet 13:20 into the stanza when Mink tied the game on a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle that sailed over Sigalet's left shoulder. The Wolverines regained momentum at that point and poured on the offense, finishing the period with an 18-9 shot advantage over the 20-minute span.
The third period was a track meet, with both teams racing up and down the ice and posting numerous scoring chances. U-M outshot Bowling Green 17-9 in the stanza, with the Falcons taking multiple shots as regulation expired. Both Sigalet and Montoya made game-saving stops for their teams, forcing the overtime session. Each team had its chances in the overtime, with Michigan registering two shots to BGSU's one.
Each team failed to score on the power play, with the Wolverines going 0-for-5 while the Falcons were 0-for-6. Sigalet stopped 48 shots to earn Perani Cup First Star honors, while Montoya halted 29 of 30 shots in his first collegiate tie.
Michigan will return to Ann Arbor next weekend to open a four-game homestand as it hosts the Lake Superior State Lakers for a two-game CCHA series on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 15-16. Opening faceoff is slated for 7:35 p.m. both nights at Yost Ice Arena.
Q U O T E S
Head Coach Red Berenson
On BGSU goalie Jordan Sigalet ... "I'll give their goalie a lot of credit. They found a goalie and he's a good player. If a goalie is a good goalie, then we have to find a way to get the puck in. We've got to pay the price and score goals. I don't think we did that tonight."
On the lack of scoring ... "There were no easy goals tonight. That was not the case. There were no easy goals and you had to earn a goal, and we just didn't capitalize and there wasn't anyone who could really make the difference in that game, but we played hard and we played with a lot of emotion. We're playing without some great players, some real good players. It's great to get Andy Burnes back, we're going to miss (Jed) Ortmeyer obviously, and everyone's going to have to pick up the slack."
On the tie ... "I don't feel good about that point. Sometimes a tie on the road is good, sometimes it isn't, and this isn't."

Sophomore defenseman Andy Burnes made his return to the lineup after missing the last five games while recovering from mononucleosis.
Senior forward Jed Ortmeyer was out of the lineup tonight with a knee injury suffered in Friday's (Nov. 8) game. Nystrom served as an assistant captain when Shouneyia and Burnes were sidelined with injuries.
