Walter is the sixth Wolverine to win the Freshman of the Year award and the first since the 1997 campaign. Julia Froud was the last Wolverine to earn the award, when she too led all freshmen across the finish line, finishing ninth. Jennifer Armstrong (1990), Deanna Arnill (1994), Katie McGregor (1995) and Marcy Akard (1996) are Michigan's other four honorees.
McGuire was named Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his 10-year Michigan career after his Wolverines won their fourth conference title last Sunday. McGuire earned three consecutive conference honors as he led the Maize and Blue the conference championships from 1992-94.
The Wolverines return to action next Saturday (Nov. 16) when they head back to West Lafayette to compete in the 6,000-meter NCAA Great Lakes Regional. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on Purdue's Varsity Cross County Course.
