The No. 7 University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team (2-0, 0-0 Big Ten) opens its Big Ten Conference season this Saturday (Nov. 9) with a trip to East Lansing, Mich., for a 1 p.m. meet with intrastate rival Michigan State at the Charles McCaffree Pool.
Maize and Blue vs. Green and White ...
Michigan has won the last 26 meetings against Michigan State and owns an all-time record of 59-5 against the Spartans dating back to the 1924-25 season. Last season the Wolverines defeated the Spartans by the score of 137-99 at Canham Natatorium (Feb. 9). In the first meeting between the two schools Michigan captured a 54-14 victory during the 1924-25 season.
Scouting the Opponents ...
Michigan State -- The Spartans head into the weekend's action with a record of 0-3, 0-1 Big Ten, following a pair of setbacks last week against Southern Illinois (200-99) and Missouri (177-122). Michigan State travels to Notre Dame on Friday (Nov. 8) before hosting the Wolverines Saturday afternoon (Nov. 9) at 1 p.m.
Last Week: No. 7 Michigan Downs No. 6 Florida ...
The No. 7-ranked Wolverines remained undefeated in the 2002-03 season with a 132-109 victory at No. 6 Florida last Friday (Nov. 1) in Gainesville, Fla. With seven individual event titles and five one-two finishes, the Maize and Blue moved to 2-0 on the season. Three freshmen led the way for U-M as Chris Dejong (Holland, Mich./Holland HS), Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) and Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) took four first places against the Gators at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center Natatorium. Dejong and Tarwater each posted single event victories, with Dejong winning the 200-yard backstroke (1:45.65) and Tarwater taking the top spot in the 200-yard butterfly (1:48.49). Vanderkaay was Michigan's lone two-event champion, with wins in the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyles in 4:26.23 and 9:02.00, respectively.
Youngsters Continue to Make Waves ...
The Wolverines had five freshmen earn points in the 132-109 victory at Florida last Friday (Nov. 1), with three earning individual event titles. Chris Dejong, Davis Tarwater, Peter Vanderkaay, Tyler Deberry (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino HS) and Andrew Albright (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) combined to score 44 points in individual races and added eight more in the two relays.
Who Can Ketch 'Em ...
Junior Dan Ketchum (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) won his second straight 200-yard freestyle race of the year last Friday (Nov. 1) with his second NCAA consideration time of season at 1:37.88. Ketchum, the reigning Big Ten Conference Swimmer of the Year and Michigan Male Athlete of the Year, set a Big Ten and Michigan school record in the event at last year's Big Ten Conference Championships (March 1).
Continuing the Trend ...
With his second consecutive win in the 200-yard freestyle, Dan Ketchum made it 12 straight dual meets that Michigan has won the event dating back to last season. In 2001 Ketchum took the top spot in seven of 10 meets, with teammate Garrett Mangieri (Old Tappan, N.J./Mercersburg Academy, Pa.) winning the other three.
Make them Say Ow ...
Sophomore Chuck Sayao (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthral Park) captured his first win of the season with his win in the 200-yard individual medley last Friday (Nov. 1). Sayao's time of 1:51.65 was 0.04 seconds better than teammate Tony Kurth (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales HS), who finished second in 1:51.69.
Dejong Takes Top Spot with Back to the Wall ...
Freshman Chris Dejong won his first career individual event title last Friday (Nov. 1) with a victory in the 200-yard backstroke at Florida. The freshman touched the wall in first place with an NCAA consideration time of 1:45.65.
He's Going the Distance ...
Freshman Peter Vanderkaay won both distance events at Florida last Friday (Nov. 1) as he claimed victories in both the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyles. Vanderkaay was the lone dual-event champion for the Wolverines with times of 4:26.23 and 9:02.00, respectively. In two meets this season the freshman has three individual event wins as he placed first in the 500-yard free at Eastern Michigan (Oct. 25) with an NCAA consideration time of 4:27.20.
Tarwater Flies to Victory ...
Freshman Davis Tarwater took the top spot in the 200-yard butterfly for his first collegiate individual event win. Tarwater clocked in at 1:48.94, nearly two seconds ahead of his closest competition.
Tarwater Swims to NCAA Consideration ...
Davis Tarwater earned the first individual NCAA consideration time of his career last Friday (Nov. 1) with a runner-up showing in the 200-yard freestyle at Florida. The freshman posted a time of 1:38.03, second only to teammate Dan Ketchum's clocking of 1:37.88.
Two Straight 2-0 ...
Michigan's 2-0 dual meet record this season marks the second straight year the Maize and Blue has opened the season with consecutive wins. Last year the Wolverines posted a record of 8-3, 5-0 in the Big Ten, and finished second in the Big Ten Championships and ninth at the NCAA Championships. Before the 2001-02 season Michigan last posted a 2-0 mark in dual meets during the 1996-97 season when it went on to a 6-2 record en route to winning the Big Ten championship.
The Urbanchek File
Michigan head coach Jon Urbanchek enters his 21st year as head coach of the men's swimming and diving program. He has watched eight of his swimmers go on to earn Olympic medals. He led his 1995 team to an NCAA championship, while individually his swimmers have racked up 35 national titles. On the conference level his teams have won 12 Big Ten championships while posting a staggering record of 91-4 in conference dual meets for a winning percentage of .958. His overall dual meet record is similar, as he has led the Wolverines to an impressive 151-29 (.839) mark.
Michigan in the Polls ...
Michigan opens the season with a seventh-place national ranking in the bi-weekly CSCAA Swimming Poll. In the first poll of the season, released Oct. 25, Michigan received 130 points.

On the Horizon ...
The Wolverines have a week off from competition before they head to Austin, Texas, to meet the No. 1-ranked Longhorns at the Lee and Joe Jamail Swim Center. The two teams will swim an exhibition meet on Friday (Nov. 22) at 6 p.m. and return to the pool Saturday (Nov. 23) for a non-conference dual at 1 p.m.
