This Week: Wolverines Travel to Top-Ranked Texas
The No. 5 University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team heads to Austin, Texas, to face the No. 1-ranked University of Texas Longhorns Friday and Saturday (Nov. 22-23) in the Lee and Joe Jamail Swim Center. The Wolverines and Longhorns begin the two-day affair with an exhibition meet Friday at 6 p.m. CST and return to the pool Saturday for a dual meet scheduled at noon CST.
Maize and Blue vs. Burnt Orange and White
Michigan is 4-4 all-time against Texas with a 1-3 record in Austin, Texas, where the Longhorns have taken the last three meetings. This year marks the first time the two teams have met in a dual meet since the 2000-01 campaign, when like this weekend both teams were ranked in the nation's top 10. No. 1 Texas defeated No. 9 Michigan 127.5-112.5 in Ann Arbor to even the series record at 4-4. U-M's last win in the series came in the 1996-97 season when the Wolverines triumphed by the score of 129-114.
Scouting the Opponents
Texas -- No. 1 Texas enters the weekend matchup with an unblemished record of 2-0, with victories over No. 5 Southern California (208-143) and No. 17 Texas A&M (202-138) at the Nov. 2 tri-meet in the Lee and Joe Jamail Swim Center. The Longhorns also won the Big 12 Relays (Oct. 13) with a score 116 points. The Longhorns on the Internet: www.TexasSports.com.
Last Time in the Pool: Michigan Pummels Michigan State
Then No. 7-ranked Michigan continued its undefeated 2002-03 campaign with a 145-98 victory at Michigan State in its Big Ten Conference opener two weeks ago (Nov. 9) in the Charles McCaffree Pool in East Lansing, Mich. The Wolverines won seven of the 14 events, including both relays, against the Spartans. Freshman Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) led the Maize and Blue claimed an individual title and helped the Wolverines to a pair of relay wins, while fellow classmate Tyler DeBerry (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino HS) earned his first collegiate victory with a time of 15:41.83 in the 1,650-yard freestyle.
Fast Waters for Davis
Freshman Davis Tarwater led the Maize and Blue with three first-place finishes against Michigan State (Nov. 9), as he was on both the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relay teams while also taking the top spot in the 100-yard free with a time of 46.77.
From Dry Heat to Wet Water
Freshman Tyler DeBerry earned his first collegiate victory with a time of 15:41.83 in the 1,650-yard freestyle at Michigan State (Nov. 9). The freshman finished 20 seconds ahead of runner-up David Habel of Michigan State (16:01.48). DeBerry returned to the pool later in the meet and finished second in the 500-yard free with a time of 4:38.05.
On Z-Mark
Sophomore Zayd Ma (Ann Arbor, Mich./Clonlara HS) collected his second 200-yard butterfly win of the season as he took the top spot with a time of 1:54.30 at Michigan State (Nov. 9), out-touching by 0.27 seconds fellow classmate Chuck Sayao (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park), who finished in 1:54.57. Ma earned his first event victory at Eastern Michigan (Oct. 25) with a time of 1:51.11.
Best with Back to the Wall
Freshman Chris DeJong (Holland, Mich./Holland HS) leads the nation as the fastest swimmer in the 200-yard backstroke through Nov. 7, according to CollegeSwimming.com. DeJong's time of 1:45.65 set Nov. 1 at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center Natatorium in Gainesville, Fla., is 0.46 seconds faster than Florida's Chris Kellam, who ranks second at 1:46.11.
Peter is A-Ok for Michigan
According to CollegeSwimming.com, freshman Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) is the nation's leader in the 500-yard freestyle as he clocked in with a time of 4:26.33 at Florida (Nov. 1). The rankings (through Nov. 7) also list Vanderkaay with the third fastest time in the 1,000-yard free at 9:02.00.
Cutting Through the Mucky Muck
Freshman Davis Tarwater ranks in the nation's top four in two races through Nov. 7. Tarwater's time of 1:38.02 in the 200-yard freestyle, set at Florida (Nov. 1) is the third fastest time nationally in the event this year, while his mark of 1:48.94 in the 200-yard butterfly, also set at Florida, ranks fourth in the nation.
Ketch the Action
Sophomore Dan Ketchum (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) set the nation's second fastest time in the 200-yard freestyle (through Nov. 7) three weeks ago when he won the event at Florida (Nov. 1) with a time of 1:37.88. Ketchum also boasts the 14th fastest national time in the 100-yard free with a mark of 45.55. Ketchum has won the 200 free in both races he has swam this season.
Relay Wonders
Michigan has two relays ranked as the second-fastest teams in the nation as the 400 medley and 400 free relays are runner-up to Florida in each event through Nov. 7. The Wolverines foursome of Chris DeJong, Garrett Mangieri (Old Tappan, N.J./Mercersburg Academy, Pa.), Peter Vanderkaay and Dan Ketchum touched the wall in 3:18.11 in the 400 free relay. In the 400 medley relay the team of DeJong, Jeff Hopwood (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto HS), Davis Tarwater and Mangieri posted a time of 3:00.61.
The Urbanchek File
Michigan head coach Jon Urbanchek is in his 21st season as head coach of the men's swimming and diving program. He has watched eight of his swimmers go on to earn Olympic medals. He led his 1995 team to an NCAA championship, while individually his swimmers have racked up 35 national titles. On the conference level his teams have won 12 Big Ten championships while posting a staggering record of 92-4 in conference dual meets for a winning percentage of .958. His overall dual meet record is similar, as he has led the Wolverines to an impressive 153-29 (.841) mark.
Michigan in the Polls
Following a 3-0 start, including a 132-109 victory at then No. 5 Florida, the Wolverines jumped two spots in the most recent bi-weekly CSCAA Swimming Poll (Nov. 12). Michigan opened the season at No. 7 with 130 points.

On the Horizon
The Wolverines have a week off from competition before they return to Ypsilanti, Mich., for the Eastern Michigan Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Dec. 6-7) at the Michael H. Jones Natatorium. The EMU Invite is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on Friday and a 10 a.m. on Saturday.
