This Week: EMU Classic ...
The University of Michigan women's cross country team will stay in Ann Arbor this week as the Wolverines will compete in the 5,000-meter, non-scoring Eastern Michigan University Classic at Buhr Park this Friday (Oct. 25) at 4 p.m. Michigan will rest its top harriers for this race in preparation for next Sunday's (Nov. 3) Big Ten Championships in West Lafayette, Ind.
Last Time on the Path: NCAA Pre-Nationals ...
The Wolverines finished 10th in the 38-team field of the Blue Division race at the NCAA Pre-Nationals last Saturday (Oct. 19) in Terre Haute, Ind. Leading the way for the Maize and Blue was freshman Rebecca Walter (Beverly Hills, Mich./Groves HS), who finished 35th overall in a personal-best time of 21:22. Junior Lindsey Gallo (Freehold, N.J./Howell HS) also set a personal best on the 6,000-meter LaVern Championship Course when she clocked in at 21:39.
Running Down the Rails on a Crazy Train ...
Freshman Rebecca Walter set a personal-best time for a 6,000-meter course when she stopped the clock in 21:22 at the NCAA Pre-National meet on the LaVern Gibson Championship Course last Saturday (Oct. 19). Walter lowered her previous-best mark by 26 seconds. She set the previous time of 21:47.3 on the same course two weeks prior at the Indiana State Invitational (Sept. 28).
Gallo Goes Low ...
Junior Lindsey Gallo lowered her personal-best time to 21:39 for a 6,000-meter race with that time at the NCAA Pre-Nationals last Saturday (Oct. 19) in Terre Haute, Ind. Gallo set her previous mark two weeks earlier in Terre Haute when she clocked in at 21:42.1.

The Wolverines fell six spots in the weekly FinishLynx NCAA Division I Poll following a 10th-place finish in the Blue Division race at the NCAA Pre-Nationals last Saturday (Oct. 19) in Terre Haute, Ind.

The Mike McGuire File ...
Mike McGuire is in his 11th season as a head coach for the Michigan women's cross country team. McGuire has led the Wolverines to three straight victories in 2002, with wins at the Running Fit Detroit Mercy Invitational (Sept. 7), Mel Brodt Invitational (Sept. 14) and the Sundodger Invitational (Sept. 21). In his first four seasons, McGuire won three consecutive Big Ten Conference and NCAA District IV championships, and finished as high as second at the 1994 NCAA National Championship. All told, McGuire's Michigan teams have nine top-two finishes at the Big Ten Championships and eight top-two finishes at the regional championships, winning the regional meet in 1993, '94 and '95. His teams have finished among the nation's top 10 five times at the NCAA Championships.
Up Next ...
The Maize and Blue looks to continue its success at the Big Ten Championships under 11th-year head coach Mike McGuire. Under McGuire the Wolverines have nine top-two finishes in 10 years of action at the Big Ten meet, including five consecutive runner-up showings.
