This Week ...
The University of Michigan men's soccer team (3-4-1, 0-1 Big Ten) will play only one match this weekend as the Wolverines travel to Bloomington, Ind., for a Big Ten Conference matchup with the defending Big Ten champion Indiana Hoosiers. The match will be held in Indiana's Bill Armstrong Stadium at 2 p.m. EST/CDT. Last year in a semifinal match at the Big Ten Tournament Michigan battled the eventual national runners-up to triple overtime before falling 1-0.
Scouting Report:
Indiana -- The Hoosiers enter the weekend as the No. 4 ranked team in the nation with a record of 6-1-2, 2-0 in the Big Ten, under 30th-year head coach Jerry Yeagley. Indiana players have earned four Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors in 2002. Junior/sophomore goalkeeper Jay Nolly was the most recent recipient as he was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week this week after a one save 110-minute shutout performance at Penn State. In nine games between the pipes this season, Nolly has allowed six goals for a 0.63 goals-against average and has recorded five shutouts. Leading the offensive attack for the Hoosiers are seniors Ryan Mack and two-time 2002 Big Ten Offensive Athlete of the Week, Pat Noonan. Both are tied for third place in the conference with 14 points. Mack and Noonan each have four assists and five goals on the season, tying them for forth and fifth place in the respective categories. Michigan vs. Indiana ...
Indiana has won all three matches in the series and has yet to allow a goal. Michigan's three matches against Indiana have come with the Hoosiers ranked in the national top 10. Indiana was ranked No. 5 when it won 7-0 in Bloomington in 2000 and No. 6 when it won 4-0 during the regular season last year in Ann Arbor. When the two teams met in the semifinals at the 2001 Big Ten Tournament in Madison, Wis., Indiana came in ranked No. 4. The Wolverines took the eventual tournament champions and national runners-up to triple overtime before the Hoosiers won 1-0.
Last Week: Splitting on the Road ...
The Maize and Blue split a pair of non-conference road matches last weekend as Michigan defeated Evansville 6-2 on Friday (Sept. 27) and lost 2-0 to Dayton Sunday (Sept. 29). The Wolverines opened the weekend earlier than scheduled due to the remnants of Tropical Storm Isodore. Isodore's heavy rains left Evansville's Black Beauty Field unplayable, forcing the game to be played on Division Street Field at 4 p.m. EST/CDT, three hours earlier than the originally scheduled kickoff. Starting in his first collegiate match, junior transfer Jrgen Schmieder (Regensburg, Bavaria/Stifland Gymnasium) tallied his second career hat trick as he paced the Wolverines to a 6-2 victory at Evansville. However, U-M could not solve Dayton's goalkeeper and lost 2-0 at Dayton.

Jrgen Schmieder netted his second career collegiate hat trick last Friday (Sept. 27) as the Wolverines defeated Evansville 6-2 in Evansville, Ind. Making his first start in the Maize and Blue, Schmieder displayed his aerial talent by scoring two of his three goals off headers to the far post. The Bavarian junior tallied his first of the game at 15:06 when freshman Adam Bruh (Roselyn Heights, N.Y./Wheatley HS) found him with a header just outside the six-yard box. Bruh and Kevin Taylor (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) assisted on Schmieder's second goal, another header to the far post at 57:46. Schmieder used his feet for his third goal when he beat the Evansville goalkeeper from eight yards out.
Treated with Trickiness ...
With two hat tricks in his first season with the Wolverines, Jrgen Schmieder is the first Michigan men's soccer player to register two three-goal games. In his first collegiate start last Friday (Sept. 27) at Evansville Schmieder took five shots, four on goal, and scored three goals. Schmieder notched his first hat trick in his first collegiate action, an 8-0 win over IUPUI (Sept. 6). Schmieder entered the game at halftime and scored his third goal less than 24 minutes later. Only one other player in the program's three-year varsity existence has registered a hat trick. Sophomore Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) tallied the program's first hat trick with three goals in the first half against IUPUI.
Hat Trick in One, Three in the Other ...
Jrgen Schmieder is third on the team in goals scored this season with six in only five games. Schmieder however, only needed two games to score those six goals as he has tallied two hat tricks in 2002. Schmieder has taken 11 shots this season and nine have been on goal resulting in his six goals.
One for You and One for You ...
Freshman Adam Bruh became the Michigan leader in season and career assists last Friday (Sept. 27) when he tied the school's single game record with three helpers in the Wolverines' 6-2 defeat of Evansville. Bruh currently has eight assists in only six games in his first year with the Maize and Blue, surpassing J.J. Kern's (2000-01) 2001 season total of six. With his third assist of the game against Evansville, eighth of the season, Bruh topped Kern's career total of seven.

Adam Bruh tied the program record for assists in a game with three assists in the Michigan's 6-2 victory at Evansville (Sept. 27). The three helpers tie fellow New Yorker Knox Cameron (Bronx, N.Y./ Cardinal Spellman HS) for the program's single game assist record. Cameron had three assists in an 8-0 route of IUPUI (Sept. 6). The three assists set a career high for Bruh who earlier in the year had a pair of two assists games. Bruh aided on a pair of goals against Cal-Santa Barbara (Sept. 1) and IUPUI (Sept. 6).
Turpin Tallies Too ...
Mychal Turpin extended his single-season goal-scoring lead with a goal at Evansville last Friday (Sept. 27). Turpin netted his team-leading seventh goal at 6:26, giving the Wolverines a 1-0 lead. Turpin has scored Michigan's opening goal three times this season.
Turpin Gets 10th
With a goal at Evansville last Friday (Sept. 27), Mychal Turpin broke the career double-digit goal-scoring plateau. Turpin currently has 10 goals, which rank second on Michigan's all-time list, one tally behind Knox Cameron, who with a goal against the Purple Aces increased his career number to 11.
Opportunity Knox ...
Sophomore Knox Cameron scored his program-leading 11 goal of his career last Friday (Sept. 27) in the win at Evansville. The goal gave Cameron 15 points on the season, setting a new program mark for points in a season. Cameron entered the match with 13 points, which tied his total in 2001. He also set a new personal best in goals scored at Evansville. Cameron netted five goals in 18 games last year. In 2002, he has scored six goals in only eight matches.
Even Steven-son ...
Junior tri-captain Mike White (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) ended his freshman and sophomore seasons with two goals and two assists, respectively. Entering the match at Evansville (Sept. 27) White had two goals and two assists for 2002. With an assist on Michigan's first goal, White set a career best for assists in a season with three. Later in the match White evened his goal-to-assist ratio when he beat the Evansville keeper from four yards out at 73:49.
Blanks Gets First Assist ...
Freshman Trai Blanks (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) registered his first career point last Friday (Sept. 27) when he found Jrgen Schmieder just outside the eight-yard box for a Schmieder's third goal of the game.
Offensive Explosion ...
Michigan leads the Big Ten Conference in five offensive categories in 2002. Playing only eight games, the Wolverines have scored 72 points, 16 points more than second-place Michigan State, on a conference leading 24 goals and 24 assists. Michigan also leads the conference in goals per game (3.00) and assists per game (3.00).
Helping Bruh ...
Adam Bruh leads the Big Ten with eight assists this season, three more than Ned Grabavoy of Indiana and Erol Goknur of Wisconsin. In six games in 2002, Bruh is averaging 1.33 assists per game.
Michigan 2, 3 and 3 in Goals Scored
The Wolverines have three athletes in the top four spots on the conference goals scored list. Mychal Turpin is second in the conference with seven goals and Jrgen Schmieder and Knox Cameron are tied for third with six goals apiece.
I Love Gooooooooooals ...
Michigan scored a school-record eight goals against IUPUI on Sept. 6, surpassing its previous best scoring output of five, set last year in a home win against Western Michigan (Sept. 30). Since the program's inception in 2000, the Wolverines have totaled nine three-plus goal games, posting a record of 7-1-1.

Rain, Rain Go Away, You'll Make Us Play Another Day ...
Mother Nature decided the outcome of the Michigan vs. Oakland match Sept. 20 when she sent heavy rains and lighting in the Ann Arbor area, forcing the postponement of the match. After a 30-minute delay, the officials took the field to survey its conditions. It only took them five minutes to rule the field unplayable and the head coaches to reschedule the match for 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 10. The venue will change, as the match will be played at the OU Soccer Field in Rochester, Mich. The two teams met there last year and played to a 2-2 tie.

The Wolverines return home following three straight road games. Michigan will play Bowling Green State on Wednesday (Oct. 9) at 7 p.m. on Elbel Field and then face Big Ten rival Michigan State on Sunday (Oct. 13) at the U-M Soccer Field for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
