Wolverines Down DePaul to Complete Perfect Weekend

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team completed an weekend sweep Sunday afternoon (Jan. 20), beating DePaul 6-1 at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (2-0) dominated doubles play by sweeping all three matches and continued the strong showing by winning five of the six singles matches.
Freshmen Michelle DaCosta (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne HS) and Leanne Rutherford (Calgary, Alberta/National Sports School) raised their record to 9-3 on the season with an 8-2 win over Szilvia Keleman and Stephanie Matko at the top doubles spot. Junior Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./West Hampton Beach HS) and sophomore Kavitha Tipirneni (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS) added an 8-2 win at No. 2 to secure the team point, while sophomores Kim Plaushines (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) and Lisa So (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS) contributed an 8-3 victory at No. 3 to complete the doubles sweep.
Michigan carried the momentum into singles action, receiving dominating performances at the No. 2 through No. 6 spots in the lineup from Rutherford, DaCosta, Duprez, Plaushines and junior Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS). The Wolverines won all five matches in straight-set fashion and yielded only 13 total games in those 10 sets. The Blue Demons gained their only point of the match as Szilvia Keleman claimed a 7-6, 7-5 win over Tipirneni at the No. 1 spot.
Michigan takes 10 days off before returning to the hardcourt against Notre Dame on Wednesday, Jan. 30 (5 p.m.) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
