EAST LANSING, Mich. -- With wins over Michigan State and Ohio State on Saturday (Jan. 19), the No. 17-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team posted its first two wins of the season. The Wolverines topped Michigan State (138-105) and Ohio State (148-94) at the Charles McCaffree Pool to even their record in the Big Ten Conference at 2-2 while improving their overall mark to 2-4.
The Wolverines won four individual races and two relays in the meet, which featured double event winners in sophomore Kelli Stein (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Waterson HS), sophomore Annie Weilbacher (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales HS), sophomore Sara Johnson (West Bloomfield, Mich./Lahser HS) and junior Laura Kaznecki (Wolverine Lake, Mich./Western HS).
Weilbacher's two victories came on relay teams as she competed in the 400-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Wolverines opened the meet with the top performance in the 400-yard medley relay at 3:48.66 as senior Lindsay Carlberg (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS), Stein and Kaznecki joined Weilbacher for the win. Weilbacher then teamed with Johnson, junior Erin Abbey (Cleveland, Ohio/Mayfield HS) and freshman Tracy Egnatuk (Albion, Mich./Albion Senior HS) to win the 400-yard freestyle relay at 3:30.29.
Three members of the two victorious relay teams went on to post wins in individual races. Stein was the top performer in the breaststroke with a mark 1:04.29 and Johnson led the field in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:05.73. In the sprints, Kaznecki was first in the 50-yard freestyle with a mark of 24.22 while Egnatuk was runner-up with a posting of 24.24.
The Wolverines other win came from freshman Amy McCullough (West Bloomfield, Mich./Mercy HS) as she cruised to a win in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:00.97. McCullough, the Michigan high school state champion in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races in 2001, has adapted to the longer distance events as Saturday's win was her second of the season in the 1,000-yard freestyle.
Michigan's next meet will be on Saturday, Feb. 2, when it hosts Notre Dame at Canham Natatorium at 3 p.m.
