ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan Director of Athletics Bill Martin announced tonight (Friday, Sept. 14) the 2001 football schedule has been adjusted after postponing this Saturday's (Sept. 15) game vs. Western Michigan in view of the national tragedy. The Wolverines will eliminate the Sept. 29 bye week in their schedule and push back both the WMU and Illinois games one week.
"We want to thank the Big Ten Conference Office, Commissioner Rick Chryst and the Mid-American Conference Office, Western Michigan University, the University of Illinois, Ball State University and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga for making these changes possible," Martin said. "We are pleased to keep our schedule intact and provide our coaches, team, fans and alumni with the schedule it originally intended to play."
A day after postponing this Saturday's game, the Wolverines and Broncos have agreed to meet next Saturday, Sept. 22, at Michigan Stadium. Western Michigan, originally scheduled to host Ball State on that date, will reschedule that contest for Nov. 24 at Waldo Stadium in Kalamazoo.
U-M and Illinois have agreed to move their Sept. 22 Big Ten Conference opener at Michigan Stadium to Saturday, Sept. 29, a week in which both programs had a bye.
"In an effort to inform our fans as quickly as possible we wanted to announce these changes today, " Martin added. "The time of the games still must be approved by the Big Ten Conference. If the games are not televised they will be played at noon. The Illinois game time and television arrangement is subject to change and could be selected under the six- or 12-day provision as designated under the conference television package."
