The University of Michigan, the Detroit Metro Sports Commission and the Palace of Auburn Hills partnered on the successful bid. U-M will serve as the NCAA host institution.
The event, which will be held March 15-17, 2007, is expected to generate $10 million in local economic impact and consume approximately 10,000 hotel rooms.
Dave Martin, chair of the NCAA Wrestling Committee, credits the Detroit area's central location, superior facilities and the fact that it is in the heart of "wrestling country" as highlights of the bid's success.
"Our bid incorporated the reputation and tradition of University of Michigan athletics, including our strong wrestling program. That helped us," said Joe McFarland, U-M head wrestling coach.
"The Palace of Auburn Hills is one of the premier sports and entertainment venues in the United States," said Stu Mayer, senior vice president for the Palace of Auburn Hills. "We have had a tremendous amount of success in hosting NCAA events in the past and our staff looks forward to welcoming the NCAA Wrestling Championships in 2007. The Palace should prove to be an ideal site to stage this prestigious event."
"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to host this national championship here in metro Detroit," said Dave Beachnau, director of sports marketing for the Detroit Metro Sports Commission. "We look forward to showcasing the Detroit of 2007 to visitors from throughout the country."
