Hickey is also a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Psi Chi (Psychology National Honor Society). She recently graduated with a GPA of 3.68 and degrees in both psychology and political science and leaves this summer for two and one-half years in Africa as a member of the Peace Corps.
On the athletic front, Hickey has been a member of the first varsity eight for all four years of her collegiate career, just one of two U-M athletes to accomplish that feat in the five-year history of the Michigan women's rowing program. For her efforts at the Big Ten Conference Championships (April 28), she was named to the 2001 All-Big Ten first team. Throughout this season, Hickey has led the Wolverines to their second consecutive Big Ten championship, third consecutive Central Region championship and a No. 2 national ranking, the highest in the program's history.
Hickey also was voted by her teammates as the person most exemplifying what it means to be a Michigan rower. Over her career at Michigan, she has volunteered her time to a number of causes, including Toys for Tots, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Student Athlete Advisory Council.
To be nominated for the Verizon Academic All-America awards, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 GPA. The spring team consists of athletes from rowing, lacrosse, track and field, water polo, tennis and golf, and District IV includes schools from the states of Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. As a member of the District IV team, Hickey is now eligible for Verizon Academic All-America honors (announced June 14).
The second-ranked Wolverines are currently in Gainesville, Ga., training for the NCAA Championships which are scheduled for May 24-26 on Lake Lanier.
