Phillips Takes Fourth in Hammer as Big Ten Meet Opens

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team competed in the first day of the Big Ten Conference Outdoor Championships today (Friday, May 18) at Indiana University. The Wolverines finished the day in sixth place with 6.25 points. Minnesota (33.25), Purdue (30), Wisconsin (21), Ohio State (10) and Michigan State (10) ended the first day of competition ahead of Michigan.
Junior Tasha Phillips (Sarasota Fla./Booker HS) led the way for the Maize and Blue in the heptathlon as she is currently in third place with 3,049 points. Sophomore teammate Breanne Tenclay (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS) holds the fifth-place spot. The 100-meter hurdles was the best event for both Phillips and Tenclay as they took second and third, respectively.
Two field event finals also took place on Friday. Sophomore April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) scored the most points for Michigan on the day, taking fourth in the hammer throw with a heave of 174-0. It was Phillips' first time competing in the event at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships. In the pole vault, sophomore Anna Fisher (Ann Arbor, Mich./Gabriel Richard HS) tied for eighth place, reaching a height of 11-2 1/4.
Finishing off the night, redshirt freshman Jane Martineau (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant HS) posted a time of 37:51.37 in the 10,000-meter run to take eighth place. It was the first time this season Martineau ran in the event.
The Big Ten Outdoor Championships continues through Sunday (May 20). Saturday's action will begin at 10:15 a.m. EST/CDT.
