U-M Places Second in NCAA Prelims, Advances to Finals

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Led by juniors Daniel Diaz-Luong (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt HS) and Scott Vetere (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown HS), the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team scored 216.850 its session of the NCAA Championships National Qualifier on Thursday (April 5) at Ohio State's Saint John Arena.
The Wolverines placed second among the six teams and joined evening session qualifiers No. 2 Ohio State (217.075) and No. 6 Michigan State (213.350) in advancing to Friday's Team Finals. No. 7 Iowa, No. 9 Minnesota and No. 12 Stanford also were in the evening session.
The Wolverines were led by Diaz-Luong, who took second in the all-around with a score of 54.975. Contributing to his all-around score ware a second-place finish on the floor exercise (9.200) and third-place finishes on the pommel horse (9.400) and still rings (9.450). Vetere captured first on the horizontal bar (9.350) and finished second on the still rings (9.500). He also placed fourth on the pommel horse with a 9.350.
Also earning high marks for Michigan were junior Brad Kenna (Barberton, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit HS), who scored a 9.200 to tie for second on the floor exercise. Sophomore Kris Zimmerman (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier HS) finished in second on the vault (9.325) and the horizontal bar (9.100) while taking third on parallel bars (9.000). Sophomore Jamie Hertza (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield HS) contributed to the team score on the floor exercise (9.100) and pommel horse (9.100).
Michigan posted the highest team score on the floor exercise (36.350), pommel horse (37.050), still rings (36.700) and horizontal bar (35.600), and the Wolverines took second place on the vault with a 36.700.
The Wolverines continue a quest for their second national championship in three years at the Team Finals on Friday (April 6) at 7 p.m. at St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio. Joining the Wolverines will be No. 1-ranked Oklahoma, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 5 California, No. 6 Michigan State and No. 8 Penn State. OU (218.300), Cal (214.550) and PSU (213.625) were the top three teams in the afternoon session.
