PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Junior Katie Jazwinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) of the University of Michigan has been selected as the Big Ten Conference Athlete of the Week for women's track and field for her performance at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays on April 20 in Walnut, Calif.
Jazwinski placed ninth among collegiate competitors and 16th overall in the 5,000-meter run with a personal-best and NCAA automatic qualifying time of 16:06.71. This makes her the first female or male Wolverine of the 2001 season to qualify for the NCAA Championships with an automatic time or mark. It also makes her the only Wolverine to qualify for two NCAA events, as she has a provisional qualifying time in the 1,500 (4:20.22), which she set at the Duke Invitational (April 7).
Jazwinski is ranked fourth in the nation in the 5,000-meter run (as of April 24) with her NCAA automatic time of 16:06.71. She is also ranked fifth in the nation in the 1,500 with her time of 4:20.22.
This is the first time of the 2001 season a Wolverine has won the Big Ten Athlete of the Week award. For Jazwinski, this is the second time she has received this recognition. She picked up the award during the 2000 cross country season for her first-place finish at the Miami Invitational (Sept. 9). The last Wolverine to earn the Big Ten Athlete of the Week award for track and field was Brandi Bentley (1997-2000) on May 17, 2000.
Jazwinski and the Maize and Blue will be in action this weekend with partial squads competing at the Penn Relays (April 26-28) in Philadelphia, Pa., and at the Drake Relays (April 27-28) in Des Moines, Iowa.
