ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team captured its 10th home victory of the season Saturday (April 21), beating Indiana by a 5-2 score to set a new Varsity Tennis Center record for home wins in a season (10-2 home mark this season). The Wolverines (11-8, 5-4 Big Ten) won the doubles point and four of the six singles matches to break the previous mark of nine home wins set during the 1998-99 season.
Michigan won the doubles point with victories at two of the three spots. Sophomores Chris Shaya (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Saddlebrook Academy, Fla.) and Chris Rolf (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) won a commanding 8-1 match at the No. 1 spot over Indiana's Rahman Smiley and Ricardo Jordan. After the Hoosiers won an 8-3 match at No. 2, junior Ben Cox (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) and freshman Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 victory over Paul Jacobson and Ari Widlansky at the No. 3 spot.
In singles action, the Wolverines received a pair of straight-set victories from juniors Dan McCain (Largo, Fla./Canterbury School) and Greg Novak (Stoney Creek, Ontario/Cardinal Newman HS). McCain won his sixth straight match with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Paul Jacobson at No. 3, while Novak tallied a 6-2, 6-4 win over Bernard Tsepelman at No. 5. After a victory at No. 2 by Indiana's Ian Arons, the Wolverines' Shaya clinched the team victory with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Widlansky at No. 6. Junior Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) added a come-from-behind 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 victory against Milan Rakvica at the top spot to end a career-long six-match losing streak.
