ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team won its first home outdoor meet of the season with the Michigan Triangular today (April 14) at Ferry Field. The Wolverines (190.5 points) defeated Central Michigan (95.5) and Michigan State (71), thanks in large part by claiming first in all 18 events on the day.
Two Ferry Field records and one Michigan record also went down on the afternoon. Sophomore April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) broke her own Michigan hammer throw record for the third week in a row, with a heave of 186-3, which also provisionally qualifies her for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Freshman Melissa Bickett (Akron, Ohio/Revere HS) had the other Ferry Field record as she tossed a personal-best mark of 164-4 in the discus.
The sprints began with the Wolverines taking the top two spots in the 100-meter dash. Freshman Adrena Williams (Berkeley, Calif./James Logan HS) and senior Candice Mullings (Marietta, Ga./Walton HS) went one-two, respectively. In the 200, Michigan won the top three spots as senior Regine Caruthers (Inglewood, Calif./St. Bernard HS) won the race, while Mullings added her second runner-up of the day and freshman Mora Arnold (Gregory, Mich./Chelsea HS) came in third. The 400 was identical to the 100 with the Maize and Blue having the two fastest times. Sophomore Carly Knazze (Southfield, Mich./Southfield HS) and junior Shalina Rankin (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln HS) came in first and second, respectively.
Michigan did not let up in the middle distance events either. In the 800-meter run senior Lisa Ouellet (Sudbury, Ontario/LaSalle SS) and sophomore Rachel Sturtz (Traverse, Mich./Traverse HS) continued the streak of Wolverines placing in the top two. The 1,500 saw redshirt freshman Jane Martineau (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant HS) take first, with junior/sophomore Jeanne Spink (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea HS) finishing in third. Junior Katie Jazwinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) then respnded by dominating the 3,000, winning the race by 1:11.
The Wolverines ran well in the hurdles as well. Freshman Vera Simms (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani HS) took first in the 400-meter low hurdles, with teammates Breanne Tenclay (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS) and Tamika Craig (Inkster, Mich./Dearborn Robichaud HS) finishing second and third, respectively. Simms added a third-place finish in the 100-meter low hurdles, following junior Tasha Phillips (Sarasota, Fla./Booker HS), who was victorious in the event.
The Maize and Blue also won both relays -- the 400- and 1,600-meter relays -- taking the 1,600 by a margin of nine seconds.
The field events saw two records set, but the success did not stop there. Sophomore Nicole DeNamur (Algoma, Wis./Algoma HS) won the high jump, clearing a height (5-6) that was almost five inches higher than anyone else in the competition. Mullings was victorious in the pole vault to go along with her sprinting abilities. Simms and Tasha Phillips went one-two, respectively, in the long jump, while sophomore teammate Teyonna Simpson (Fremont, Calif./Mission San Jose HS) won the triple jump.
But through all the success, the day belonged to the Michigan throwers. Going along with her record-setting day in the hammer, Phillips also took first in the shot put, and she placed second in the discus behind Bickett, who swapped positions with Phillips as Bickett took second in the hammer. The hammer also had senior Nicki Proulx (Standish, Mich./Standish-Sterling HS) coming in third. To round out the field, freshman Janelle Jaha (Stanley, N.D./Stanley HS) won her first javelin competition, with a personal-best toss of 135-0.
The Wolverines will head to the Mt. SAC Relays next weekend (April 20-22) in Walnut, Calif.
