Better Luck This Time
Last year's race at Ohio State was cancelled due to bad weather and debris in the river. Michigan was scheduled to race against the Buckeyes and Iowa, but all of the races were cancelled.
Buckeyes on the Rise
Ohio State is a team on the rise. After nearly qualifying for the national finals in 1999, the Buckeyes were third at the Big Ten Championships and found themselves at the 2000 NCAA Championships in May.
Rankings are Out
Michigan is ranked fourth in the first U.S. Rowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) poll of the 2001 season (April 4). Brown, the defending national champion, is ranked No. 1 and received 19 of 24 first-place votes. In addition to Michigan in the fourth spot, four other Big Ten teams are ranked among the top 20 in the nation -- Ohio State is tied for seventh, Iowa is 15th, Michigan State is 16th and Wisconsin is 17th. Indiana and Minnesota are not ranked.
Head Coach Mark Rothstein
Head coach Mark Rothstein is in his fifth year as the head of the Michigan rowing team. Rothstein led the transition from club team to varsity in 1996 and has been the only head coach in the program's history. He has lead the program to three consecutive fifth-place finishes at the NCAA Rowing Championship. In the summer of 1999, he was chosen to coach the U.S. Under-23 team at the Nations Cup in Hamburg, Germany. After guiding the team to the inaugural Big Ten championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship last spring, Rothstein was selected as the Big Ten Co-Coach of the Year and the Midwest Region Coach of the Year.
