Women's Tennis Heads to South Bend
The Michigan women's tennis squad travels to Notre Dame this Saturday (March 10, 11 a.m.) for a matchup with the No. 6-ranked Fighting Irish at the Eck Tennis Pavilion. Notre Dame leads the all-time series 11-7, and has won six straight matches against the Wolverines.
Michigan vs. Notre Dame
This will be the 19th meeting between the Wolverines and Fighting Irish. Notre Dame leads the all-time series 11-7, and has won nine of the last 10 matches between the two schools. The Wolverines' last victory against the Fighting Irish was a 5-4 match in Ann Arbor during the 1993-94 season. Notre Dame won an 8-1 match last season at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Irish have a six-match winning streak against the Wolverines and have taken seven straight matches against U-M in South Bend (7-1 all-time home record).
Musgrove Excelling
Sophomore Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS) enters the Notre Dame match with a team-best five singles victories in dual match competition. Musgrove has a 5-2 dual match record, including a three-set victory against San Diego's Catherine Heppell last week (6-1, 6-7, 7-6). Musgrove has an impressive 8-2 overall singles record and is 6-1 against regional opponents. She has tallied an impressive 27-15 career singles record.
Fuzesi Gains 10th Win
Senior Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gimnazium) heads into the Notre Dame match after collecting her 10th singles win of the season. Fuzesi has a 10-7 overall singles mark, and collected her 10th victory in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) against San Diego's Paola Arrangoiz. Fuzesi has compiled a 4-4 dual match record and is 8-4 against regional opponents. She teams with freshman Kim Plaushines (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) in doubles competition, posting a 4-4 overall record. Fuzesi has an 8-7 overall doubles mark.
Nolan, Vaughn Tied for Wins Lead; Tipirneni One Behind
Freshman Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) and junior Jen Vaughn (Jefferson City, Mo./Lawrence HS) are tied for the team lead with 12 singles victories this season. Nolan, ranked 60th nationally in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, has tallied a 12-7 overall record and is 11-4 against regional opponents. Vaughn has registered a career-best 12-6 record and is 3-4 in dual match competition. Freshman Kavitha Tipirneni (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS) is one win behind the pair with an 11-8 overall record. Tipirneni is ranked 62nd nationally in singles by the ITA.
Women Ranked 58th
The women's tennis squad heads into this week's action ranked 58th in the WingspanBank.com Collegiate Tennis Rankings administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (released Feb. 28). The Wolverines (3-5) were ranked 57th in the previous poll. They began the 2001 dual match season listed 57th, and were ranked 56th for a two-week stretch.

The women's tennis squad plays a pair of matches against regional opponents. Michigan hosts Western Michigan in a mid-week match at the Varsity Tennis Center (Wednesday, March 14, 6 p.m.), and then travels to Marquette for a Saturday afternoon affair (March 17, noon CST).
