Return to Conference Action
The University of Michigan women's tennis team returns to Big Ten Conference dual match action looking to capture its first conference win of the year. The Wolverines (5-6, 0-2 Big Ten) hope to gain this first victory on the road, traveling to Wisconsin Friday afternoon (March 23, 4 p.m. CST) and Minnesota Sunday morning (March 25, 10 a.m. CST).
Michigan vs. Wisconsin
The Wolverines and Badgers will face each other for the 30th time this Saturday (March 23) at the Nielsen Tennis Center. The Badgers hold a 17-12 all-time advantage but the series is even (5-5) in the last 10 matches played. Michigan has a 7-15 record against the Badgers under head coach Bitsy Ritt, who is a 1983 graduate of Wisconsin. This will be the second straight season that Michigan plays at Wisconsin. U-M won a 4-3 match during the regular season last year (April 15) by sweeping the doubles and earning singles victories from Danielle Lund, Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS) and Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach HS), and the Wolverines defeated the Badgers 4-3 in the first round of the Big Ten Championships held at the Varsity Tennis Center last year.
Wolverines vs. Golden Gophers
Michigan and Minnesota will meet for the 24th time Sunday (March 25). The Golden Gophers hold a 13-10 advantage in the all-time series, including a 5-2 victory last year at the Varsity Tennis Center as Brooke Hart and Jen Duprez managed singles wins for Michigan's only points (March 18). Michigan dominated the series in the 1990s, posting an impressive 8-3 record against Minnesota. The Wolverines are 8-11 all-time against the Gophers under head coach Bitsy Ritt.
Wolverines Win a Pair
The Michigan women's tennis team collected a pair of 6-1 victories against regional opponents last week. U-M defeated Western Michigan Wednesday (March 14) at the Varsity Tennis Center to end a six-match losing streak, and followed up with an impressive victory at Marquette Saturday afternoon (March 17). The Wolverines are one victory from evening their season record (5-6).
Nolan, Vaughn Seek 15th Wins
Freshman Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) and junior Jen Vaughn (Jefferson City, Mo./Lawrence HS) enter this Big Ten weekend looking to collect their 15th singles victories of the season. Nolan has a 14-8 overall singles record, is 13-5against regional opponents and has a 4-7 dual match record at No. 1 and No. 2. Vaughn has an impressive 14-7 overall singles record this season and is 5-5 in dual match competition at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots. She is 13-5 against regional opponents, and moved her career singles record to 27-29 with two wins last week.
Duprez Nears 10 Wins
Sophomore Jen Duprez heads into the Wisconsin and Minnesota matches needing two singles victories for 10 this season. Duprez defeated Western Michigan's Mariana Quintanilla (6-4, 2-6, 7-5) and Marquette's Vero Briseno (7-6, 6-2) at the No. 6 spot in her return to the dual match lineup last week. She has compiled an 8-4 overall record and returned to the lineup after missing the early portion of the schedule because of a knee injury. Duprez has tallied a 23-16 career singles record.
Musgrove Eyes 30th Singles Victory
Sophomore Joanne Musgrove enters this week's action seeking her 30th career singles victory. Musgrove has compiled a 29-16 career singles record and reached double digits this season with a pair of wins last week. She posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Western Michigan's Meaghan Colville and tallied an impressive 6-0, 6-1 win against Marquette's Sommer LaValley to earn her 10th singles win of the year. Musgrove has a 10-3 overall singles record and holds a team-best 7-3 mark in dual matches.
Fuzesi Catching Fire
Senior Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gimnazium) heads into the week of Big Ten Conference action having won three of her last four matches. Fuzesi posted a pair of singles victories last week, beating Western Michigan's Melanie Remynse (6-0, 6-4) and Marquette's Eva Trujillo (4-6, 6-3, 6-3) at the No. 3 spot. Fuzesi has a 12-8 overall singles record this season and has a 36-43 career singles mark. She is 6-5 in dual match competition (5-3 at No. 3, 1-2 at No. 4) during the year and is 10-5 against regional foes.
Next Week
The women's tennis squad continues Big Ten Conference dual match action with a home match against in-state rival Michigan State. The match will be played Friday evening (March 30, 6 p.m.) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines have a 29-15 advantage in the all-time series with the Spartans, and have won 13 consecutive matches between the two schools.
