U-M Uses Singles Sweep to Defeat Western Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team ended a six-match losing streak Wednesday evening (March 14), defeating Western Michigan by a 6-1 score at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (4-6) dropped the doubles point to the Broncos but fought back with wins in all six singles matches.

Western Michigan won the doubles point with victories at the top two spots, but Michigan thwarted the attempted sweep with an 8-6 victory by freshmen Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook HS) and Kavitha Tipirneni (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS) at the No. 3 spot.

The Wolverines stormed back to capture the team victory with wins at all six singles spots. Tipirneni, senior Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gimnazium) and sophomore Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS) got things started with dominating, straight-set wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5, respectively. Junior Jen Vaughn (Jefferson City, Mo./Lawrence HS) clinched the victory with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Nikki Douglass at the No. 4 spot. Nolan and sophomore Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach HS) added three-set victories to end the Wolverines' six-match losing streak.

Michigan returns to action Saturday afternoon (March 17) at Marquette. The match time has been switched from noon to 2 p.m. CST in Milwaukee.
