This Week: Alex Wilson Invitational
The Michigan women's track and field team travels to Notre Dame for a "last chance" meet on Friday and Saturday (March 2-3) at the Loftus Sports Complex in South Bend, Ind. The Alex Wilson Invitational will provide several Wolverines the opportunity to compete against schools from all over the nation with one final chance to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held on Friday and Saturday, March 9-10, in Fayetteville, Ark. This is the third year in a row that Michigan will take part in the Alex Wilson Invitational.
2000 Alex Wilson
Katie Jazwinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) was the highlight of the Alex Wilson Invitational last year for the Wolverines after posting a Michigan season-best and NCAA provisional time of 9:40.86 to place second in the 3,000-meter run. Michigan's only sprint competitor of the meet was Regine Caruthers (Inglewood, Calif./St. Bernard HS), who placed second in the 400-meter dash with a Michigan season-best 54.89.
Big Ten Indoor Championship Recap
Michigan came in fourth at the Big Ten Conference Indoor Championships on Sunday (Feb. 25) after two days of competition at Purdue University. The Wolverines' 89 points were half a point away from taking third as Purdue won the team title with 108 points, followed by Ohio State (97) and Indiana (89.5). The Wolverines moved up from seventh place after the first day competition, winning two individual championships and establishing four NCAA provisional times.
Big Ten Champs
Katie Jazwinski and Rachel Sturtz (Traverse, Mich./Traverse HS) highlighted the Big Ten Championships as both went home individual champions. Jazwinski was victorious in the 5,000-meter run with a personal-best and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 16:31.73. She also added a runner-up finish in the 3,000 with another NCAA provisional time of 9:28.27. Sturtz won her first Big Ten title in the 800 as she clocked in at 2:11.07.
Wolverines Own 800 Meters
The Wolverines dominated the 800-meter run at the Big Ten Championships (Feb. 25) as they racked up 21 points, with champion Rachel Sturtz leading the charge. Ursula Taylor (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg HS) and Adrienne Hunter (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) placed third and fourth, respectively.
Sprinters Save Best for Last
Carly Knazze (Southfield, Mich./Southfield HS) and Mora Arnold (Gregory, Mich./Chelsea HS) each ran to NCAA provisional qualifying times at the Big Ten Championships (Feb. 25) in the final of the 400-meter dash to finish third and fourth, respectively. Knazze came right back later in the day and took sixth in the 200 as well. Regine Caruthers (Inglewood, Calif./St. Bernard HS) gave U-M a boost in the 600 as she placed runner-up with a time of 1:32.73.
U-M Tough in the Field
Nicole DeNamur (Algoma, Wis./Algoma HS) provided U-M with a tie for third in the high jump at the Big Ten Championships (Feb. 24-25) as she cleared 5-8 1/2. In the triple jump, Teyonna Simpson (Fremont, Calif./Mission San Jose HS) leaped to a fourth-place mark of 39-4 1/2. April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) had a toss of 47-8 in the shot put to come in eighth, while Anna Fisher (Ann Arbor, Mich./Gabriel Richard HS) reached a height of 11-7 in the pole vault, good enough to tie for eighth place.

Big Ten Honors
Katie Jazwinski and Rachel Sturtz were named to the All-Big Ten first team with their championship performances at the Big Ten Championships (Feb. 24-25), in the 5,000-meter run and 800, respectively. Jazwinski doubled her award with a selection to the All-Big Ten second team as well for her second-place performance in the 3,000. For Jazwinski, this is the second time she has been given both honors, as she achieved them last year during the 2000 outdoor season. This is Sturtz's first appearance on the All-Big Ten first team.

Leading the Way
Katie Jazwinski leads the U-M squad with five individual wins during the 2001 indoor season. Teyonna Simpson is second with four titles. Tasha Phillips (Sarasota, Fla./Booker HS), Adrena Williams (Berkeley, Calif./James Logan HS) and Regine Caruthers are tied with three victories this season. Rachel Sturtz, Ursula Taylor, April Phillips and Nicole DeNamur have won two individual events thus far during the indoor season for a well-balanced Wolverine attack. Williams, who won two events in the same meet (Red Simmons, Jan. 20), is the only Wolverine to pull off the trick.
Staying Perfect
Katie Jazwinski is the only Wolverine perfect this season, as she won the mile twice (Feb. 3 and Feb. 17) in her only two appearances.
