DETROIT -- The bleeding has stopped for the University of Michigan ice hockey team. The fifth-ranked Wolverines defeated Lake Superior State 4-2 on Saturday night (Feb. 24) at Joe Louis Arena, earning their first victory in five games. Bill Trainor (Canton, Mich.) recorded a career-high three points (0-3-3) and Craig Murray (Penticton, B.C.), Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario) and Andy Hilbert (Howell, Mich.) recorded multiple points for the Maize and Blue.
The Wolverines got out to a quick start when an unlikely scorer -- Joe Kautz (Des Plaines, Ill.) -- put U-M up at 2:47 of the first period with his second career goal, set up by Murray and Trainor. The Lakers fought back seven minutes later on a charming goal by Aaron Davis at 9:37. LSSU almost took the lead with five minutes left in the period, but Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) stretched his body backwards and kept the puck out of the net and the first period ended 1-1.
Three and half minutes into the second period, the Lakers took a 2-1 lead. Michigan came right back with a goal by Murray at 7:18 to tie the score at two. Assists went to Cammalleri, his 50th point of the season, and Blackburn, his fifth helper of 2000-01. Five minutes later U-M took a 3-2 lead when Hilbert broke his four-game scoreless drought with his team-leading 22nd goal of the season. Mike Roemensky (White Lake, Mich.) dug the puck out and dished off to Trainor, who took it into the zone and dump it off to Hilbert, who snapped a wrist shot at the point for the goal.
Not wanting to protect a one-game lead, Cammalleri came through with a goal for the first time in five games with his 21st of the season at 3:48 of the third period, putting the Maize and Blue up 4-2. The goal was assisted by Trainor and Hilbert, who both recorded their third points of the evening. Hilbert put the icing on the cake with a goal at 18:36 to end the game at 5-2.
The Wolverines will play their last regular-season game on the road against Michigan State on Thursday (March 1) at 7:35 p.m at Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing. The game will be televised by FOX Sports Net.

Head Coach Red Berenson
On the game ... "It was a big win because the whole season we were fighting for first place and with that out of reach we didn't want to drop to third or fourth. It wasn't a great game, but it was a win and we needed a 'W' badly."
On his team's effort ... "We had all of our guys play well tonight. We got goals from players you don't expect. (Joe) Kautz's goal was huge because we haven't had a lead in a game in quite a while. (Craig) Murray played tough and guys like (Dave) Wyzgowski contributed, so it was nice to see an all-around effort."
