Jazwinski Leads Michigan on First Day of Big Ten Meet

Michigan's biggest highlight of the day came in the 3,000-meter run, in which Katie Jazwinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) finished runner-up with an NCAA provisional time of 9:28.27. The Wolverines received three more points with a sixth-place performance in the distance medley relay, and Breanne Tenclay (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS) added a sixth-place showing in the pentathlon with 3,399 points.
Other scorers on the day came in the field events. April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) had a toss of 47-8 in the shot put to come in eighth. In the pole vault, Anna Fisher (Ann Arbor, Mich./Gabriel Richard HS) reached a height of 11-7, good enough for a tie for eighth place.
Michigan put itself in good position to close out the competition in top form. In the sprints, Carly Knazze (Southfield, Mich./Southfield HS) qualified in both the 200-meter dash and the 400 with times of 25.01 and 56.31, respectively. The 600 will include Regine Caruthers (Inglewood, Calif./St. Bernard HS), who posting a time of 1:34.10 and came in second in her heat. Tamika Craig (Inkster, Mich./Dearborn Robichaud HS) and Shalina Rankin (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln HS) will join Caruthers in the 600 finals as both ran to qualifying times.
Michigan will have four runners in the 800 meters final. Ursula Taylor (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg HS) won her heat and has the top time going into the final (2:11.92). Rachel Sturtz (Traverse, Mich./Traverse HS), Adrienne Hunter (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) and Erin White (Battle Creek, Mich./Central HS) also advanced to the final.
The Wolverines return to action tomorrow (Sunday, Feb. 25) at the Big Ten Indoor Championships for the final day of competition in West Lafayette, Ind.
