MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Junior Tim Siciliano (San Marcos, Calif./San Marcos HS) and freshman Dan Ketchum (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) set meet records to lead the University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team Friday (Feb. 23) on the second day of the Big Ten Championships.
The ninth-ranked Wolverines moved into a second-place tie with Penn State, each with 378 points through 14 events and sharing a 138-point lead over fourth-place Wisconsin. Host Minnesota (549 points) increased its commanding lead to 172 points after winning three events Friday.
Siciliano won the 400-yard individual medley for the third consecutive year, setting a Big Ten Championships record by almost two seconds with his NCAA automatic qualifying time of 3:42.45. Jason Mallory (Granger, Ind./Penn HS) placed sixth in the event with an NCAA consideration time of 3:51.29.
Ketchum won the 200-yard freestyle in an NCAA automatic time of 1:34.99 while tying the Big Ten Championships record. Chris Thompson (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg HS) contributed 13 points by finishing in sixth place in an NCAA consideration time of 1:37.10, while Garrett Mangieri (Closter, N.J./Mercersburg Academy) finished in the eighth spot at 1:41.62.
The 800-yard freestyle relay team of Jordan Watland (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka HS), Thompson, Ketchum and Mangieri had a first-place finish in an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 6:26.33, two seconds faster than second-place Minnesota. It marked the Wolverines' first Big Ten relay title since taking the 800 freestyle relay in 1998.
Other top-five finishes for the Wolverines came from Scott Werner (Haymarket, Va./Paul VI HS), fourth in the 100-yard breastroke in an NCAA automatic time (55.08); Minnesota native Jordan Watland (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka HS), fourth in the 100-yard backstroke (48.58); and Jason Coben (Newtown Square, Pa./Maple Newtown HS), fifth in three-meter diving (514.30).
The three-day competition concludes Saturday with preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m. and finals at 7 p.m. at the University Aquatics Center. Thompson, a 2000 Olympics bronze medalist in the 1,500-meter freestyle, will be shooting for his fourth straight Big Ten 1,650-yard freestyle title.
