Nystrom, who is replacing injured Harvard defenseman Noah Welch, currently leads all Michigan freshmen with seven goals and six assists for 13 points, and he is one of five rookies to skate in each of Michigan's 17 games this season. A product of the U.S. National Development Program Under-18 Team, Nystrom was recently ranked fourth among U.S. College players eligible for the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
Nystrom has earned CCHA Rookie of the Week honors twice this season, the most of any CCHA player. His most recent award came this week after posting two goals and two assists in last Saturday's (Dec. 8) 5-2 win at Miami, the most points by a U-M freshman since the 1998-99 campaign.
With three players on the squad, Michigan has the best representation of any college hockey team on Team USA, and its most players named to the United States roster since 1994, when Kevin Hilton, Ryan Sittler and Blake Sloan skated for the Americans in Czechoslovakia.
The 2002 U.S. National Junior Team will assemble in Ann Arbor on Sunday (Dec. 16) in preparation for the 2002 IIHF World Junior Championship. The squad will travel to Switzerland on Dec. 19 for exhibition games against Switzerland (Dec. 21) and Sweden (Dec. 22) before opening competition against the defending champion, the Czech Republic, on Dec. 25.
