Mangieri Named Big Ten Athlete of the Week
Junior Garrett Mangieri (Tappan, N.J./Mercersburg Academy, Pa.) was named the Big Ten Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week on Nov. 6 after winning all four individual events in which he competed as well as swimming on two victorious relay teams in dual meet victories over Indiana (Nov. 2) and Georgia (Nov. 3). Against the Hoosiers, Mangieri won the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle with times of 21.04 and 45.23, respectively. He also aided the 160.5-82.5 dual meet victory over Indiana by swimming the anchor on the 200-yard medley relay that earned a first-place showing with a time of 1:32.98. The following day, Mangieri racked up victories in the 50- (21.24) and 100-yard freestyle (45.23) in a 131-111 win over Georgia, to go along with competing on the top 200-yard medley relay team (1:32.98).
Michigan Signs Three Standouts
Head coach Jon Urbanchek announced on Nov. 21 that the men's swimming and diving signed three-student athletes in Chris DeJong (Holland, Mich./Holland HS), Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) and Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS). DeJong and Tarwater were both on the United States team that compted at the 2001 Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia. DeJong and Vanderkaay were also 2001 Michigan state champions as DeJong captured the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke, while Vanderkaay was the top performer in the 500-yard freestyle.
The Last Time
Although the Texas Invitational this weekend won't affect a team's dual meet record, Michigan will enter the competition with its first 4-0 record since the 1994-95 season. In that campaign, the Wolverines posted a 9-1 mark en route to a Big Ten Conference championship and an NCAA championship. This year, the Maize and Blue has posted dual meet victories over Florida (Oct. 26), Eastern Michigan (Oct. 27), Indiana (Nov. 2) and Georgia (Nov. 3).
Last Meet Recap
Michigan improved to 4-0 on the year with dual meet victories over Georgia and Indiana. The Wolverines opened the weekend of Nov. 2 by defeating the Hoosiers for the 12th consecutive time by a score of 160.5-82.5. The Maize and Blue followed that up with a 131-111 victory over Georgia on Saturday (Nov. 3) at Canham Natatorium.
Return Trip
This will mark the second time the Michigan men's swimming and diving team will compete at the Texas Invitational. Last year the Wolverines accumulated 321 points en route to a sixth-place finish. Scott Werner posted the best finish for the Maize and Blue with a second-place showing in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Distance Dominance
Over the years Michigan has earned a reputation as being one of the top distance swim programs in the nation. This season, the Wolverines have won every single event 500-yards or longer and have gone on to a 1-2-3 sweep in five of the eight events. Altogether, swimmers representing the Maize and Blue have only allowed three other swimmers to even place among the top three in the 500-, 1,000 and 1,650-yard freestyle or the 400- and 800-meter freestyle.
Leading the Way
One of the reasons Michigan has dominated the distance events has been the arrival of freshman Brendan Neligan (Hempstead, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy HS). With wins in the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyles against Georgia (Nov. 3), Neligan now has six collegiate wins under his belt as he won two events each against Georgia, Indiana (Nov. 2) and Florida (Oct. 26).
Racking Up the Points
Since placing second in the three-meter competition against Florida on Oct. 26, sophomore diver Jason Coben (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown HS) has reeled off six consecutive victories. After competing in eight events this year, Coben has been the top diver in seven of them while also establishing personal best scores on the one- and three-meter boards. Against Georgia (Nov. 3), Coben posted a score of 349.87 on the three-meter, which came one day after setting a personal best on the one-meter against Indiana with a score of 333.97. Both scores acheived NCAA zone qualifying standards.
Wolverines Ranked No. 9 In the Nation
Michigan held its No. 9 ranking in the latest CSCAA Top 25 poll after posting a 4-0 start to the season. Stanford remained the No. 1 team in the nation followed by defending national champion Texas. Minnesota, at No. 7, is the only Big Ten Conference school ranked ahead of Michigan, while Wisconsin (No. 13), Purdue (No. 21), Northwestern (No. 22) and Penn State (No. 25) also earned spots in the rankings.
