"These two guys are going to have a huge impact on this team from the moment they step into the gym as freshmen," said head coach Kurt Golder. "Both of these guys have the potential to contribute in the all-around as freshmen."
Laury and Hernandez both recently competed at the 2001 U.S. Gymnastics Championships. Laury is the current Junior Olympic national champion on the floor exercise and a former champion on the pommel horse. "Laury is one of the top five junior gymnasts in the country," said Golder.
Hernandez captured fourth place in the all-around at the 2001 Junior Olympic Championships. "He has world-class tumbling skills (on the floor exercise)," explained Golder. "One of the most encouraging signs was his third-place finish on the pommel horse (at last year's Junior Nationals)."
Golder added, "Both of these gymnast have the ability to be world-class gymnasts in the next four years."
The Wolverines kick of the 2001-02 season on Saturday, Dec. 15, with their annual Maize and Blue Intrasquad at Cliff Keen Arena at 7 p.m.
