ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team defeated Indiana in dual-meet competition for the 12th straight time, downing the Hoosiers 160.5-82.5 Friday evening (Nov. 2) at Canham Natatorium. The win improves the Wolverines' record to 3-0 (1-0 Big Ten) for the first time since the 1997-98 season, while the Hoosiers fall to 1-1 (0-1 Big Ten) on the year.
Michigan set the tone early when three of its freshmen swept the 1,650-yard freestyle. Brendan Neligan (Hempstead, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy HS) took first place with a time of 15:26.19, followed by Andrew Hurd (Oakville, Ontario/Universal HS) in second at 15:27.30 and Zayd Ma (Ann Arbor, Mich./Clonlara HS) in third (15:43.68).
The Wolverines also received a boost from sophomore diver Jason Coben (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown HS), who scored personal bests on the one- and three-meter boards en route to first-place finishes in both events. Coben's scores of 333.97 on the one-meter and 345.22 on the three-meter both achieved NCAA zone qualifying standards.
In the sprint events, the Maize and Blue racked up victories in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles as well as claiming the top spots in the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 200-yard medley relay. Junior Garrett Mangieri (Closter, N.J./Mercersburg Academy) was personally responsible for two of the wins while contributing to another. His times of 21.04 in the 50-yard freestyle and 45.61 in the 100-yard freestyle were both good for first place, and he anchored the victorious 200-yard medley relay team that posted a time of 1:32.98.
The 200-yard medley relay team featured multiple winners on the night in juniors Jeff Hopwood (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto HS) and Tony Kurth (Toledo, Ohio/St. Fracis de Sales HS). Hopwood, a two-time All-American, won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:03.62 and Kurth competed on the top-placing 200-yard freestyle relay team (1:24.45).
Other first-place showings on the night belonged to sophomore All-American Dan Ketchum (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) and freshman Chuck Sayao (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park HS). Ketchum touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:40.87) and Sayao edged out his competitors in the 200-yard backstroke (1:50.69).
Michigan returns to Canham Natatorium Saturday (Nov. 3) to host Georgia at 1 p.m.
Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Jon Urbanchek
On the team's performance ... "The 1,650 was really good today. The young guys got tired a bit, but to have three freshmen go 1-2-3 is great. Then we did well in the short events although Indiana is one of the faster teams in the conference in those events. That will be good for our guys' confidence."
On Indiana ... "In 20 seasons we have only lost three Big Ten dual meets. Indiana is responsible for two of those, so you never relax when you swim against them. They always have something up their sleeve and they always swim well."
Sophomore All-American Dan Ketchum
On Saturday's meet against Georgia ... "Georgia is going to be tough tomorrow. We are physically ready to swim but they are always a good team so it will be a tough meet. They came in here a couple of years ago and beat us so I think a lot of guys want to avenge that loss."
Sophomore Jason Coben
On his diving performance ... "I had my best performance in both events. Indiana has been strong in diving for a long time, but we wanted to win for (Diving) Coach (Dick) Kimball. We wanted to make him happy and beat Indiana and I was glad I could contribute."
