ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's golf team did not let windy and cold conditions stop it Saturday (Oct. 6) as the Wolverines sit atop the leaderboard and have seven players in the top 10 after the first round of the Wolverine Invitational at the U-M Golf Course.
The Michigan Blue team opened the tournament with a 318 total to take the lead by 18 strokes over Eastern Michigan, which is second after its 336 total. Michigan's Maize team is in third after it fired a 337 total, while Western Michigan is fourth with 343.
Michigan senior Misia Lemanski (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile HS) leads the tournament by four strokes after her two-over-par 75 in the first round. Playing the U-M Maize team, sophomore Sarah Kruer (La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla Country Day) sits in a tie for second with Eastern Michigan's Kelly Pickett after an opening round of 79. Wolverine junior Kim Benedict (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) is third after her round of 80 and U-M senior LeAnna Wicks (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) and Western Michigan's Erica Bieniek are fifth after they both carded 81s.
The Wolverine Invitational concludes Sunday (Oct. 7) with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. for the final round at the U-M Golf Course.
