ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis program will host the fourth annual Wolverine Fall Invitational this weekend (Oct. 5-7) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The individual tournament that includes four other Midwest teams -- Bowling Green, DePaul, Marquette and Michigan State -- starts Friday at 10 a.m., and continues throughout the weekend, beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
The Wolverines dominated last season's tournament, winning all four division of the tournament and claiming the runner-up in three of those four categories.
Sophomore Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) heads into this year's tournament looking to win her second straight Blue singles flight championship. Nolan posted a 4-0 record and defeated teammate and fellow sophomore Kavitha Tipirneni (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS) in three sets (6-3, 3-6, 6-3) to win the title. Departed U-M graduate Szandra Fuzesi (1998-2001) placed fourth, while sophomore Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach HS) took fifth place.
In the Maize singles flight, Michigan swept the top five places last year. Current senior Jen Vaughn (Jefferson City, Mo./Lawrence HS) won the title after junior Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS) withdrew in the championship final. Vaughn posted a 4-0 record, while Musgrove collected a 3-0 mark. Graduated U-M player Alison Sinclair (1997-2001) defeated sophomore Kim Plaushines (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) by a 7-5, 7-5 score to earn third place. Marya Farah (1998-2001), another Wolverine who graduated last season, posted a 6-3, 6-0 win over Western Michigan's Miriam Quintanilla for fifth place.
Sophomore Lisa So (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS) won the Wolverine singles flight that was played in a round-robin format, posting a 4-0 record. So won three of the four matches in straight sets and claimed a come-from-behind, three-set victory over DePaul's Megan Stewart in her final match (3-6, 6-4, 7-6, with a 7-1 victory in the tie-breaker).
In doubles action last season, Michigan blistered the competition by taking the top three spots. Duprez and Tipirneni claimed a hard-fought victory over teammates Nolan and Plaushines, winning 7-4 in a tie-breaker to claim the title in the Victors flight. Fuzesi and Vaughn finished in third place after claiming a 9-8 victory against Bowling Green's Devon Bissinger and Abby Bratton (won 7-1 in tie-breaker).
